Rolex Bubble-Back Unique Queen Mary Dial

Rolex Bubble-Back
Unique RMS Queen Mary Dial

John "Crash" Moittel is a daily reader of Jake's Rolex World. He is also a Trustee of miottelmuseum.com.

He wrote in recently to share some fascinating insight on is RISitus condition. John said:

"Here is a very interesting item that may now be unique—and as such—may be of interest to you. It’s a Rolex “Queen Mary.” I am attaching some photos. The photos didn’t catch it, but in actuality, the name “Queen Mary” is clearly visible on the bow of the ship image."

Seeing this beauty for the first time took my breath away! To the best of my recollection, this is the earliest known "Exotic Dial" Rolex, or, in other words, Rolex dial with graphics on it.

The RMS Queen Mary Ocean Liner is pictured below as she cruises by Manhattan back in the 1930s.

John continued:

"You seem like the most prolific and eclectic RISitus victim around my newly discovered field of interest so I’d be interested in any medications that you can recommend &/or what you think about my affliction."

RISitus, if you are not familiar with the term, stems from the term WISitus, which is a condition of sorts. "WIS" is the acronym for "Watch Idiot Savant", thus "RIS" is the acronym for "Rolex Idiot Savant". This is a condition I have happily suffered from for four decades now ;-)

John, my best advice is to "Keep Truckin'!!!". WISitus and RISitus, are some of the best conditions one can suffer from, as the cornerstone of them is The Spirit Of Inquiry, or if I am speakin' wif a cockney accent  (fink: Michael Caine), The Spirit Of Enquiry :-)

Wikipedia.com Definition:

RMS Queen Mary is a retired ocean liner that sailed primarily on the North Atlantic Ocean from 1936 to 1967 for the Cunard Line (known as Cunard-White Star Line when the vessel entered service). Built by John Brown & Companyin Clydebank, Scotland, Queen Mary along with her running mate, the RMS Queen Elizabeth, were built as part of Cunard's planned two-ship weekly express service between SouthamptonCherbourg, and New York City. The two ships were a British response to the superliners built by German and French companies in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Queen Mary was the flagship of the Cunard Line from May 1936 until October 1946 when she was replaced in that role by Queen Elizabeth.

Queen Mary sailed on her maiden voyage on 27 May 1936 and captured the Blue Riband in August of that year; she lost the title to SS Normandie in 1937 and recaptured it in 1938, holding it until 1952 when she was beaten by the new SS United States. With the outbreak of World War II, she was converted into a troopship and ferried Alliedsoldiers for the duration of the war.

Following the war Queen Mary was refitted for passenger service and along with Queen Elizabeth commenced the two-ship transatlantic passenger service for which the two ships were initially built. The two ships dominated the transatlantic passenger transportation market until the dawn of the jet age in the late 1950s. By the mid-1960s, Queen Mary was ageing and, though still among the most popular transatlantic liners, was operating at a loss.

After several years of decreased profits for Cunard Line, Queen Mary was officially retired from service in 1967. She left Southampton for the last time on 31 October 1967 and sailed to the port of Long Beach, California, United States, where she remains permanently moored. Much of the machinery, including one of the two engine rooms, three of the four propellers, and all of the boilers, were removed. The ship serves as a tourist attraction featuring restaurants, a museum, and hotel. The ship is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has accepted the Queen Mary as part of the Historic Hotels of America.[2]

Roy's Big Crown Rolex Submariner

...Rolex Studio Shot Of The Day...

Roy's Big Crown Rolex Submariner

It never ceases to amaze me, how absolutely timeless Rolex watch design is. Take for instance this vintage Rolex Submariner from the 1950s. In particular, I was tripping on how much modern Rolex watches have been inspired by past design. Notice this 1950s Rolex Submariner, essentially has a Supercase, which Rolex brought back when then they introduced the ceramic Submariner.

Bond v. Bond Imitation Is The Highest Form Of Flattery

The Official Trailer for the upcoming James Bond movie named SPECTRE was just released, and you can see it below. SPECTRE hits theaters on November 6, 2015!!!

Bond v. Bond
Imitation Is The Highest Form Of Flattery

I have been working on a huge update to my "Complete History Of James Bond Watches—The Definitive Guide", and when I came across the following image of Sean Connery wearing his Rolex Submariner, it jogged my memory and made me remember a similar posed beach shot with Daniel Craig.

And by the way, since the Queen has been calling Sean Connery, "Sir" he's still looking pretty cool on the beach. In the photo below we see Sir Sean Connery in a recent Louis Vuitton photo shot by Annie Leibovitz.

In the photo below we see Sean Connery with Ursula Andress on the set of the 1962 James Bond Mega-hit entitled, Dr. No., and Sean is sporting his Rolex Submariner.

Carroll Shelby: American Racing Pioneer and Icon

...Rolex Super Coolness...

Carroll Shelby

1923-2012

Racing Pioneer and Icon
Rolex GMT Master on Jubilee Bracelet

Carroll Shelby was not only an American racing legend, but an international icon of automotive design. Carroll Shelby began his automotive career as a race car driver, and went on to design some of the most iconic specialty sports cars in automotive history. In the photo below, we see Carroll Shelby pictured in 1987 sporting his Rolex GMT Master on a Jubilee bracelet.

Carroll Shelby is pictured below in 1966 leaning against his Ford Mustang Shelby GT350, and we see his AC Shelby Cobra in the background.

Kings Of Coolness

Pictured below, we see two Kings Of Coolness, Carroll Shelby and Steve McQueen, and in this photo, Carroll Shelby is delivering a Shelby Cobra to Steve McQueen.

In the photo below, we see Carroll Shelby at a car show sitting in his 1963 AC Shelby Cobra, and notice he is wearing a Rolex on his right wrist, which is something he and Steve McQueen had in common.

1966 Ford GT Mark II

The Ford GT40 was a super-high performance American-British racing car, which was originally built and designed in England, and later in the United States. It was powered by a series of American-made Ford engines, and it dominated the 24 Hours of Le Mans by winning four consecutive times in a row, from 1966 to 1969. The Mark II, which is pictured below gained Ford the first overall Le Mans victory in history for an American manufacturer.

In the photo below, we see the stable of Ford GT Mark 4 on display at the 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans, and in the front we see the Number 1 Ford GT which was driven by Dan Gurney, and  A.J. Foyt.

This next video overview from 1967 Le Mans, give an overview of what happened while showing all the Ford GT's on the track.

1967 Le Mans Race Winner

In the photo below we see American race car driver win the 1967 24 hours of Le Mans as he rockets past the finish line to take first place for Ford.

Carroll Shelby is pictured below, posing at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, in Le Mans, France in 1967 with his Ford GT Mark IV, Number 1 Car which had just won the Le Mans race.

...More Rolex Racing Super Coolness...

Dan Gurney & A.J. Foyt
1967 24 Hours of Le Mans Winners
Stainless Steel Rolex Datejust

Dan Gurney is an American race car driver, race car designer, and team owner. With an amazing career dating back to 1958, he is considered to be one of the living God's of racing. Dan is pictured below taking a break during the 1967 Le Mans race, with Carroll Shelby, who is wearing the checkered hat, and notice Dan is wearing his Rolex Datejust, while racing.

Dan Gurney is also pictured below after winning the 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans. His teammate for the race, A. J. Foyt is standing next to him. This photo is very famous, because Dan Gurney did not drink alcohol, so when they won, he shook-up the champagne, and popped the cork and poured it all over the place–a tradition that he started, which continues to this day. How ironic is it that the not only did Carol Shelby who designed the Ford GT Mark II wear a Rolex, but so did the two race car drivers who won the 1967 Le Mans!?!

In the photo below, we see a close-up of Dan Gurney's Rolex Datejust on a Jubilee bracelet

In the next image below, taken in 1974, we see A.J. Foyt being celebrated in a Rolex Day-Date ad.

A. J. Foyt is pictured below with Richard Petty on the 4th of July in 1975.

The Ford GT40 that Dan Guryney and A.J. Foyt won the 24 Hours Of Le Mans in is pictured below. By the way, this is the first and only time an All-American team, driving an American car has ever won the 24 Hours Of Le Mans!!!
