This Bob Hope advertisement from 1960 is classic and brings back a lot of memories...It is hard to believe this Rolex advertisement is from almost 50 years ago.  The marketing message is timeless if you think about it...

Black Dial Explorer II with Cyclops Date Lens Removed...

Some Rolex fans think Rolex watches look better without the Cyclops Date Lens, so they remove it.  I have never done this, but I think they use acetone or some kind of solvent to remove the glue that keeps the Cyclops on the crystal.

The Black Dial Rolex Explorer II does look kind of cool without the Cyclops...

The Crushed Oyster...

This vintage Rolex Advertisement from Skin Diver Magazine came out in January of 1972. It reads "Next time somebody tells you they have an amazing, new waterproof watch...Tell them about the crushed Oyster."

The add reads:

"We dropped a standard Rolex Oyster case into a pressure tank.

Then we took the pressure down to 1,000 feet to see what happened.

Nothing happened.

Then we went down to 1,500 feet. And nothing happened.

At 1,700 feet the crystal began to bend a little bit.

And at 1,900 feet the back showed signs of bending.

At 2,000 feet the crystal and the back bent severely.

And if their had been a movement inside it would have been crushed. But it wouldn't have been wet. The Oyster case was still watertight. Rolex Date Submariner $285 18kt gold $1,400."

Espresso, Coke & Pepsi GMT's

The Ultra-Rare Rolex Ferrari Red Stainless Paul Newman Daytonas...

Questionable Authenticity

Alert: It has come to our attention, after publishing this story that the authenticity of these Ferrari red watch dials is questionable. This information comes from a highly reliable source. 

We are currently investigating the authenticity of the Ferrari red Daytona dials and as soon as we conclude we will let you know.

This may be the first time in history anybody has seen these two ultra-rare Ferrari Red Rolex Daytona Prototypes side by side.

Of course the major differences between the two watches is the one on top has a black bezel.

Also the one on top lacks the Oyster designation under the the word Rolex and has a Jubilee Bracelet v. the bottom Daytona having the Oyster Bracelet.

I only know of four examples on planet earth that have this ultra-rare and beautiful Ferrari Red and Black dial.  I have been talking to many of the top Rolex Experts on Earth and the consensus is that there are between 8 & 22 examples of the Ferrari Red Rolex Daytona.

My guesstimate is they are currently worth about $1 Million US each.

My introduction...

My name is Boris, and I will be blogging on Jake's Rolex Watch Blog.

First, I would like to thank Jake, for inviting me to join his blog.

Earlier this year, I started my own blog primarily discussing watches as well as art. 

I have always been fascinated by beauty and art, and by the mechanical finesse of hand-wound and automatic watches. 

When I was a child, I started to look at people's wrists, and pushed my nose flat on jeweler's windows. It took a long time, until I got my first hand-wound watch. 

My Dad had a nonworking Dugena hand-wound watch which he gave me after I told him I knew of a watchmaker who could fix it. I had the watch fixed, and my Dad told me to keep the watch. I still have it–it still runs–but I have not worn it in twenty years. 

In 1998, when I accepted my first job in the United States (I grew up in Germany) I decided to get myself what I considered a better watch; an automatic Baume and Mercier Formula S. The watch stopped running a while ago and sits in my drawer. 

It few years later I made a friend from Texas who convinced me to look into Rolex. I remember he said that if I invested in a Rolex, I could always sell it and recoup my money. I did not initially believe him, but soon realized he was right. 

I bought a couple vintage Omegas, but realized they were difficult to sell after I decided not to keep them. 

In 2002 I got my first Rolex.

I bought a vintage 1967 Submariner Reference #5513 which I ended up selling to someone in England, with whom I am still in-touch.

From that point forward, my passion for Rolex has only increased!!!

Many different Rolex watches have come and gone. Some are still with me. I am a vintage guy, I love the look of the plastic crystal on old Rolex Sport watches. There is something about the vintage impression that is very appealing to me, it is a reflection of the history that is behind the company, the story behind the name, the aura of vintage, of old, of history and past, a past that will always be present. 

There is a timeless beauty in vintage Rolex watches that is unique and unparalleled. 

My passion for Vintage Rolex is here to stay.
