1986 John Newcombe Rolex Tennis Ad ...

...Rolex Coolness...

John Newcombe
Tennis Superstar with 26 Grand Slam Titles

John Newcombe is an Australian tennis superstar who dominated the tennis game from the early 1960s through the 1970s. He won 8 Grand Slam singles titles, and overall he won 26 Grand Slam major titles. Essentially, he was the Roger Federer of his time.

As mentioned above, John Newcombe won 26 Grand Slam titles. What exactly is a Grand Slam title? A Grand Slam Title is any time a player wins:
                • The Australian Open
                • The French Open
                • The U.S. Open
                • Wimbledon
To date Roger Federer holds the record for Grand Slam titles at 20, but his are all Men's Singles Titles. John Newcombe holds 26, which include 8 Men's Single Titles, with the rest being Double's Titles, or Mixed Doubles. If you include his 1965 Mixed Doubles shared with his count would be 27 Grand Slam Titles. He holds the record to this day for the maximum number of Grand Slam Titles.

This first Tiffany & Company Rolex Day-Date ad is from 1975.

"In an age of instant obsolescence, the classic Rolex endures."
–Rolex (1975)

This next Rolex Ad is also from 1975 and it is from Rolex's photo in the watch series which was fun. You also have to love the Rolex statement about how Rolex watches transcend obsolescence. As we look 41 years back at this Rolex ad, we realize this statement was absolutely true!!!

This next image below on the right shows John Newcombe on the right featured in a Rolex brochure from the 1970s.

This next John Newcombe ad below is from 1986, after John retired, and it refers to him by his nickname of Newk.

This next images are recent photos of John Newcombe and he is still wearing his Rolex watches which he has been wearing for at least 46 years!!!

Stuntman Vic Armstrong

...Rolex Coolness...

Vic Armstrong

Stuntman and Stunt Coordinator

Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Live and Let Die, Return of the Jedi and Superman are just a small sample of the films, Vic Armstrong has worked on as a stuntman and stunt coordinator, in addition to directing films.  He has over 50 years of experience and has worked with some of the biggest names in Hollywood including Harrison Ford, Tom Cruise, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Sylvester Stallone.

In 2001 Vic received a Technical Achievement Academy Award for "the Fan Descender for accurately and safely arresting the descent of stunt persons in high free-falls. In 2002 he received the BAFA Michael Balcon Award for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema

Armstrong doubled for Harrison Ford in the first three Indiana Jones films and they looked so alike that crew members on set would mistake Armstrong for Ford.  Ford signed a picture for Armstrong, taken on the set of The Last Crusade with the message: Vic, if you learn to talk I am in deep trouble!

In the photo below we see Director Steven Spielberg with Vic Armstrong and Harrison Ford on the set of Temple of Doom & notice Vic is rocking his Rolex Submariner!

Armstrong has worn a Rolex Submariner Reference 1680 for over 40 years. This Submariner has a couple of extra details that make it quite special. Armstrong's Submariner came from famed jewelry company Tiffany & Co which used to sell Rolex watches in the past.  As part of their agreement with the crown, Tiffany & Co were allowed to print their name on the dial of the watch and these watches that feature Tiffany & Co on the dial are coveted by collectors today.

The other cool factor of the watch, it was gifted to Armstrong by legendary Canadian actor, Donald Sutherland!.  How do we know this?  Armstrong mentions the back story, as to how he received the watch in his book:  The True Adventures of the World's Greatest Stuntman: My Life as Indiana Jones, James Bond, Superman and Other Movie Heroes

Sutherland also had the watch engraved on back, relating to something that happened on the set of the 1979 film, Bear Island, in which Armstrong doubled as Sutherland's character.

We know Sutherland is a Rolex fan and he is pictured below wearing his yellow gold GMT-Master

This special Submariner has accompanied Armstrong to film sets around the world. Armstrong is pictured below wearing it on the set of Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom, standing next to his wife Wendy Leech, who is a stuntwoman and doubled for Kate Capshaw in the film. Armstrong and Leech met on the set of Superman II, where Armstrong doubled as Superman and Leech doubled for Lois Lane.

Vic Armstrong is pictured below on the set of The Mummy 3, and notice he is wearing his Submariner with his Tuxedo...

Compares Rolex to Tiffany & Company

Rolex Retains #1 Position with Reputation Institute

This is an interesting story. Actually, it's really three stories in one. It begins with a fascinating story by Forbes.com titled "Tiffany Fails Where Rolex Wins. This story tied-in their findings with the Reputation Institutes #1 ranking for Rolex, for the third year running. In other words, Rolex is again ranked number one in reputation throughout the world, which is the second story.

Rolex is on a roll today as one of the top brands in the world. As a matter of fact, most Rolex sports watches in stainless steel are so popular today they are almost impossible to find at retail.

ROLEX V. TIFFANY & CO

Some of the key takeaway points from the Forbes.com article that compare Tiffany unfavorably to Rolex point out:

     • Rolex, by contrast, has successfully evolved into the digital world. “Rolex has successfully built a narrative outside the Rolex brand experience. It has transcended in its innovative use of the digital landscape and used digital assets to expand and enhance its story.

     • Whereas it used to be more aloof, opaque and secretive, today Rolex has inculcated a culture of greater openness and transparency, which has paid dividends in the quality of people it attracts.

     • Rolex’ bigger story is about redefining winning. To illustrate that, Rolex works with tennis champ Roger Federer as a role model for underprivileged kids to help them define winning in their own terms. “It is less about Federer as celebrity and more about how he gives back to the community as a spokesperson for Rolex.

     • Rolex, by comparison, has elegantly maintained its prestige at the same time achieved status as a good global citizen being both honest and altruistic. “Rolex has done an incredible job of telling its brand story, staying relevant, aligning with the changing world of the 21st century and truly building a brand experience that transcends the analog into the digital world.”

Below is a fascinating infographic from the Reputation Institute that show the top 100 companies for 2018, and we see Rolex is in the Number 1 position.

Speaking of Rolex and Tiffany...this brings us to the thirds story here, which is that Tiffany & Company used to sell Rolex watches, and they would screen print the "TIFFANY & CO" logo on the dial as seen on the vintage Pepsi GMT-Master below. For some reason Tiffany stopped selling Rolex watches, and I think that was a mistake. Speaking of Tiffany & Company Rolex watches, I wrote a fascinating story on this subject back in 2010 I highly recommend checking out!

The Forbes.com story really kind of bashes Tiffany & Company, by comparing it to Rolex, although it makes some really good points. I think Tiffany & Company should bring back their super iconic Art-Nouveau table lamps, and sell them in their stores. Tiffany and Company lamps were so cool!

I think this Tiffany & CO., Ad is from 1960 and it is the earliest one I have ever seen that showcases a Rolex Submariner. Very Cool!!! The Reference 5508 Submariner was rated to 100 meters, and the 5510 was the first to be rated to 200 meters.

Breakfast At Tiffany's
Ladies Rolex Catalog

Speaking of Rolex and Tiffany's, the following Rolex image comes from a 1962 Rolex catalog, and if you read the poetry, it is just amazing!!! It is so DIFFERENT than the Rolex of today...so interesting...

My best guess is this theme was inspired by the Audrey Hepburn's character she played in the 1961 movie titled, "Breakfast At Tiffany's."

This next image shows a ladies yellow gold Rolex Oyster Perpetual with a Tiffany Blue dial that has the Tiffany & Co. dial designation, which is very cool...

I was going through my archive of saved images, and I found this Hodinkee.com image of a vintage yellow gold Tiffany & Co. Rolex Datejust, which is awesome!!!

Last week we saw Paul Boutros' very rare Tiffany & Company Rolex SEA-DWELLER.

Meeting Dr. Arthur Miller on The Streets Of San Francisco...

Dr. Arthur Miller

World-Famous Underwater Cave Diver & Archaeologist

The Streets Of San Francisco
...Every Rolex Stranger Is A Friend You Just Haven't Met Yet...
A Brilliant Life With Rolex Keeping His Time

I have a most interesting Rolex GTG story to share with you. As many of you know, I was born and raised in San Francisco, California and call it home to this day. A few weeks ago, I was out in San Francisco, in the Marina and I wandered into another pal of mine on Chestnut Street named Steve.

Steve was on his way to get some frozen yogurt and invited me to join him. We had been finished for a while and were having a great conversation. We got up to walk out and a man and his wife approached us and asked if we could direct them to DeLarossa Restaurant.

We pointed them down the street, and I got a quick glance of his watch which I instantly recognized, and I asked if he was wearing a Submariner? He said, yes and asked why I asked? I introduced myself and told him my name was Jake and that I publish Jake's Rolex World Magazine which he could find at RolexMagazine.com. I asked him if he was familiar with Jake's Rolex World and he said no, so of course I mentioned he should check it out.

All of a sudden his face lit up like a Christmas tree and he handed me his Rolex Submariner and said "It is a Red Submariner I bought at Tiffany & Company 38 years ago, in 1972 and I have never taken it off my wrist since then." Curiously, I asked what he meant when he said he never took if off? He insisted he wore it all the time, like a good luck charm, and pointed out that when he slept and showered and went diving he wore it.

My pal and this strangers wife and I were chatting it up (pretty good-like ;-) and they graciously invited us to join them for a late dinner. We accepted their kind invitation and sat down for dinner. The man introduced himself as Arthur and his wife as Lourdes.

After a lot of talk about Rolex, I learned that Arthur was Dr. Arthur Miller, the world-famous American SCUBA Diver, archaeologist, academic and historian!!! No wonder we were getting along so well since I am basically a Rolex historian and archeologist of sorts ;-) Can you hear the Raiders Of The Lost Ark/Indiana Jones theme-song starting to play?

It turns out that Arthur Miller is a specialist in pre-Columbian Latin Amarica art and specializes in Mesoamerica. Arthur's research expertise has been in the study of pre-Columbian mural artworks and their iconography. He bought his Rolex Submariner in 1972 because he also specialized in exploring underwater caves and wanted the best dive watch.

Arthur Miller has published many academic papers and books on the mural art of Mesoamerican cultures, including the Teotihuacan of central Mexico, the Zapotec tombs and sites in Oaxaca, and Maya sites along the eastern coastline of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Arthur graduated from Colby College in Maine in 1964 and the following year he completed his Master's Degree at the Ecole du Louve in Paris which was dedicated to anthropological and art history fields. In 1969 he completed his doctorate studies at Harvard and was awarded a Ph. D.

The photo below is a close up of Arthur Miller's trusted Red Rolex Submariner that has been his daily wearer for the last 38 years straight.

I took the wrist shot below of Arthur's Rolex Red Submariner [Reference 1680]. Of course I asked him if he bought it himself or if it was a gift? He told me he bought it himself at Tiffany and Company. I asked him if when he purchased the watch if he intentionally went out of his way to purchase it with the Tiffany & Co., designation on the dial?

He proudly responded "Oh yes!!!" I asked him why? He said "I had seen the movie, Breakfast At Tiffany's and as an artist I always really appreciated Tiffany & Co. I was also inspired by the early Tiffany & Company lamps and art, so I thought it would be really cool to have a Tiffany & Co. Rolex Submariner."

The Tiffany & Co., ad below shows the same model of Rolex Submariner that Arthur Miller purchased. Notice in 1974 it was only $445.

After dinner we walked outside and the Apple store was next door to the restaurant. I knew from our conversation Arthur and his wife were both Apple Mac users, so we stood in front of the Chestnut street Apple store and kept talking. I pulled out my iPhone and started taking photos of him and his really cool Rolex Submariner as seen throughout this story.

I remember thinking how cool it was to meet a professional cave diver who actually used his Rolex Submariner as a tool watch back in the 1970s and adored and appreciated it so much that he was bragging that he never took it of his wrist for the last 38 years straight!!!!

We also talked a bit about diving history and how the Rolex Submariner played a pioneering role, and I asked him about every historically famous diver, of which he was familiar with.

Of course, I kept and keep thinking about Maurice Chevalier's famous words from 1964 on Rolex people when he said:

"Like a genial hotelier, Rolex has introduced me to some of the nicest people. I ask about their Rolex and they ask about mine. It's as marvelous a conversation piece as it is a timepiece." –Maurice Chevalier (1964)

I must also add that it never ceases to amaze me how friendly people typically are who wear Rolex!!! I think it really goes to show that Rolex is not just a timepiece that tells you the time, but also a mind-set that tells you something about yourself. Rolex people seem to typically be fascinated with the world around them and by people, and I also noticed people who gravitate toward Rolex typically are very conscious of quality, detail and excellence.

Today, Arthur is retired from teaching and he has been pursuing his passion as a painter. He has his paintings on his website at ArthurMiller.net. Arthur was so inspired by his career and the ancient American cave paintings, he paints in a similar style. Arthur painted the following images:

Arthur and his wife spend their time living between Spain and Mexico today. Arthur and I agreed we would do a podcast interview in the future to talk about his amazing career. Arthur is the nephew of the famous author and artist, Henry Miller who wrote Tropic Of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn.
