Fascinating Captain!

Our Captain Danny,who now publishes his Coronet Rolex Blog sent me this picture after he flew his Delta Airbus A330 widebody aircraft from Paris to Seattle. Both pilots wear GMT-equipped Rolex watches—the ultimate instrument for a transcontinental pilot.

For some reason, I couldn't stop staring at this image, trying to figure out the significance and context of all the details. For instance:

Question: Why are the time and GMT hands set differently on each Rolex watch? 

The Left Watch (Supercase Espresso GMT-Master with 50th Anniversary Green GMT Hand) belongs to the Captain of the Airbus A330 wide-body aircraft. The Captain's hour hand is set to Mountain time (home base), and his green GMT hand is set to GMT (Greenwich Mean Time).

The Right Watch (Rolex Explorer II, Orange Hand) belongs to our Captain Danny, although aboard the Airbus A330 Wide Body Aircraft he is NOT the Captain, but the First Officer (Copilot), which explains why his jacket only has 3 gold stripes. Normally, as you can see on his PILOT STORIES banner on the right, he normally sports 4 gold stripes. I didn't realize it, but the ranking is contextually based upon the type of aircraft the pilot is flying. Danny's watch has its hour hand set to SEATTLE time, which is their destination, and his orange GMT hand is set to Mountain time, his home base.

The Airbus A330 is a super state of the art airplane that can fly really long distances without having to refuel. (Range of 11,750 km, which is 6,350 nautical miles, which is 7,300 miles) with 277 passengers. The global A330 fleet is tried and true with over 60 million flight hours since it began flying. 

Note: Nick Gould mentioned: "The first generation Rolex Explorer II, 'Orange Hand' [Reference 1655] couldn't track a second time zone. The orange hand was just an AM/PM indicator. Now the new version of the Explorer II can track a second TimeZone."

Back in 2017, I was in a San Francisco restaurant that had an outdoor room, with a closed canvas canopy above that had black and white stripes on it. I looked to see what time it was and noticed this crazy reflection the canopy was having on the ceramic bezel insert on my Single Red SEA-DWELLER. It almost made it look like it had a fluted bezel. Interesting... 

If you are into larger watches, without going overboard, I think the 43MM Single Red Sea-Dweller SRSD offers a perfect Rolex Sport Watch fit and vibe. Specifically, I like the SRSD way more than the DEEPSEA as it lacks the etched rehaut, which makes the dial larger, and more visible. Also, the shape of the case is much more flat in profile. 

I love the Black and Blue DEEPSEA gradient dial, and wish Rolex would make a 43MM SD with a similar dial. In other words, I would much prefer a watch with a larger dial like on the SRSD, as apposed to the raised rehaut that has meaningless words that say "ORIGINAL GAS ESCAPE VALVE & RING LOCK SYSTEM", which looks like unnecessary text like jackets that have a huge goofy Tommy Hillfiger logo on it. Also, no human would ever wear a Rolex on their wrist deeper than 4000 feet, so why make a watch that can descend down 12,800 feet!?!! In other words, I would love to see Rolex return to simpler designs, with less unnecessary text that is visually distracting.

I put together the image above to illustrate my idea. On the left we see the current DEEPSEA D-BLUE, and in the middle we see the current Single Red SEA-DWELLER, and on the right we see my dream D-BLUE SEA-DWELLER, which I think is infinitely simpler and better looking.

I kept a diary on my experience with the Single Red SEA-DWELLER, which offers insight into wearing it long term.

Sneaker & Pant Wrist Shot Of The Day: Darren's Single Red Submariner & Converse All Stars

Note: One of my favorite things to do is hop in the Rolex Time Machine and go back and examine Rolex stories I posted in the past. I just stumbled into this story that I originally published back in 2011, which is pretty interesting:

If you are a daily reader of Jake's Rolex World, you are probably familiar with Sneaker and Pant Wrist Shots. To the best of my knowledge, Bernhard (Bullibeer) who lives in the Dutch Netherlands started this trend.

Who is Bernhard and what exactly is a Sneaker and Pant Wrist Shot you ask? Basically, Bernhard (Bullibeer) is not only a collector of vintage Rolex watches, but he is so into them, he will basically conduct a vintage Rolex fashion show, just for himself, and he photographs these shots and posts them on the web in forums and most recently on his "100 Percent-Rolex (The Blog For Rolex Passionado's.)"

I almost forgot to mention, Bernhard (Bullibeer) typically only wears vintage sneakers to match up with his vintage Rolex watches. Of course other collectors all over the world were inspired by Bernhard's Vintage Sneaker and Rolex Wrist Shots, and started posting their own.

The logic with this is remarkably similar to photographing wrist-shots and posting them on the web, but the photographer takes it several steps further by showing how they match their watch with what they are wearing. It is really kind of a fashion-play for men.

The photos in this set are not from Berhnard, but from Darren, who is sporting his Single Red Submariner [Reference 1680] and matching it up with some leather Chuck Taylor, Converse All Stars.

So why would anybody in their right mind pose by themselves and take photos of a Rolex on their wrist and show their clothes, but not their face? I know Bernhard (Bullibeer) likes to make a shot or more of espresso before he takes the photos, so he gets all hyped-up on caffeine and takes these photo, but why?

I can't speak for Bullibeer or Darren, or anybody else for that matter, but there is just something about vintage Rolex watches that is so inspirational and timeless. Something that inspires people to achieve more. Rolex watches not only tell you the time, but they also tell you something about yourself.

I could not make up my mind as to which image I like better, so I am sharing both. The first image shows only the markers, hands and bezel pearl glowing, and the lower photo shows much more dial detail.

Even though this Pepsi GMT-Master is now considered a vintage Rolex it seems strange to me. I have been so used to seeing the new Pepsi with the Ceramic bezel and Jubilee bracelet that seeing a Rolex Oyster bracelet on a Pepsi looks almost foreign to me. Speaking of which; I wonder if Rolex will surprise us by bringing the Oyster back on the stainless Pepsi? I sure hope so as it is an amazing combo...
