The Original James Bond Watch: Coming To America

The Original James Bond Watch
Coming To America

Ian Fleming’s character James Bond has always been associated with the finest of everything; cars, clothes and, of course, watches. The National Watch & Clock Museum in Columbia, Pennsylvania will be presenting an exhibit opening in the summer of 2010 that will explore the subject of the watches of James Bond. The exhibit, Watches, James Bond Watches, will feature the watch that provided the inspiration for James Bond’s wristwatch: Ian Fleming’s own Rolex Explorer.

This wristwatch was recently identified by Dell Deaton of www.jamesbondwatches.com, as the original, literary James Bond watch in his recent article for WatchTime magazine. Mr. Deaton is serving as the National Watch & Clock Museum’s Guest Curator for the exhibit; it was through his direct work with Fleming heirs that the display of this important and historical timepiece is possible.

This is the first time that Ian Fleming’s watch has been exhibited in the United States. The watch was recently on display at the Imperial War Museum in London, featured in an exhibit on the life and work of Ian Fleming. Fionn Morgan, Ian Fleming’s stepdaughter, states “Ian would have enjoyed the idea of displaying his own Oyster Perpetual as part of an exhibition of James Bond watches…It is wonderful to see the James Bond legacy presented through the watches that this character has worn. It is further most gratifying to see Ian’s Explorer number 1016 displayed as the origin of this long and continuous chronology. Collectors and the public will learn a lot through this exhibition.”

“The National Watch & Clock Museum is honored to be able to display Mr. Fleming’s watch” Museum Director Noel Poirier comments, “and we are thankful to the Fleming family for allowing this one of a kind object to be a part of the Bond watch exhibit.” The exhibit will also include examples of the watches worn throughout the James Bond novels and motion pictures. Additionally, memorabilia from fans of the character will also be included in the exhibit.

Borg, Gerulatus and McEnroe...

Borg, Gerulatus and McEnroe
Three 1970s Tennis Greats

All of this Wimbledon excitement is great and Roger Federer wearing his stainless Rolex Datejust II on an Oyster bracelet made me think of this image where John McEnroe is wearing his stainless steel Rolex Datejust, with Vitas Gerulaitus and Bjorn Borg behind him. I am pretty certain Geulaitus and Borg also wore Rolex watches. McEnroe also won Wimbledon.

Rod from Ottawa, Canada sent in this great photo of his wife with their 5 month-old grandson, Noah–who seems to be fascinated with her Rolex Submariner. I think maybe Rod saw the photo of the Rolex Cuteness last week with the red labrador puppy and got the idea to send this photo in since it looks so similar ;-)

Rob said "My wife wears her Rolex Submariner 14060M every day and loves it!" Well Rod, she sure has a gorgeous smile!!! Congratulations on your beautiful grandson Noah!!!

An Unprecedented Look At The Presidency

"I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past." –Thomas Jefferson (Third President Of The United States from 1801-1809).

Welcome to the eighth installment of Presidential Watch Sunday. I would like to thank the White House and Pete Souza (The Official White House Photographer) for giving us unprecedented access to photos of the United States Presidency.

This first photo is of First Lady Michelle Obama with President Obama on July 4, 2009 on the national mall in Washington D.C., as they enjoy the fireworks.

Click on all images for much more detail

This next photo was taken on the South Lawn of the White House as the Foo Fighters play an Independence Day concert for United States military families.

Earlier in the day, on the Fourth of July, President Obama is photographed kissing a baby while greeting United States military families.

President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama are seen below greeting American military families at the White House on the 4th of July, 2009.

In this next photo we see U.S. military families enjoying the 4th of July festivities on the White House South Lawn.

This next photo is profound if you think about it. President Barack Obama admires a portrait of former United States President Abraham Lincoln in the Oval Office on June 29, 2009.

In this next photograph taken in the Oval Office on February 2, 2009 we see President Obama relaxing on a sofa with his wife Michelle and daughters Malia and Sasha.
