Happy Halloween!!!!!

Rolex Around The World

Halloween has really become an international event as it is celebrated around the world—particularly in the Northern Hemisphere. Morton Olesen from Denmark sent in this great Halloween Lume shot showing his Rolex GMT-Master on a Rolex box, with a pumpkin jack-o-lantern in the background.

John Goldberger from Italy sent in the great Halloween photo seen below to share with you. It features a very rare and unusual one of-a-kind pink gold Rolex Datejust with a beautiful blue lapis dial from 1974 [Reference 1601].

John Goldberger is one of the top Rolex collectors in the world and author of 100 Superlative Rolex Watches which, if you don't have copy, is an excellent Rolex book. You can check out my extremely detailed review of his book by clicking here

Thanks for sharing John & Morton!!!!! Happy Halloween!!!!

Rolex Oyster Fishbowl Ads

The First Waterproof Watch

How Rolex Brilliantly Used Fishbowls To
Showcase The Waterproofness Of The Rolex Oyster

When Rolex introduced the revolutionary Oyster in 1926 it was an amazingly useful innovation. In other words, prior to the introduction of the Rolex Oyster, there were NO waterproof watches. It is hard to fathom (no pun intended) a world without waterproof cases, since we take them for granted today, but back in the late 1920s, through the 1960s, having a waterproof watch was a HUGE DEAL.

In 1926, at age 45, Hans Wilsdorf, founder of Rolex had successfully designed, manufactured and patented the waterproof Rolex Oyster. The challenge he faced was, how to communicate the value-proposition of such a product?

1926 Italian Rolex Mermaid Oyster Poster

Hans came up with the idea of associating the fantasy of mermaids with the waterproof Rolex Oyster as seen in the 1926 Italian Rolex advertisement seen below.

Since Wilsdorf had a brilliant strategic marketing mind, he realized since human beings reasoned by analogy, if he showcased Rolex watches immersed in fishbowls, people would understand the real innovation the Rolex Oyster case offered, thus on November 9, 1922, Rolex patented an aquarium under Patent #52986, for showcasing fish swimming in the bowl with a submerged Rolex watch. The Rolex photo below from the late 1920s shows a beautiful woman with her Rolex immersed in a fishbowl, which made people really think when they saw the photo.

At the same time, as seen in the Rolex illustration below, Hans Wilsdorf came up with a brilliant idea to have authorized Rolex dealers display the waterproof Rolex Oysters watches, in fish-tanks, in their windows–with real fish swimming around the watch!!! This of course gained the fascination of many passer-bys.

1936 Swiss Rolex Oyster Fishtank Magazine Ad

Pictured below we see an actual Rolex Fishbowl store display, which would have had real fish swimming around, as well as a Rolex Oyster watch. The aqua blue water in the bowl just illustrates the waterline.
The photo below shows a different style Rolex fishbowl showcase, and obviously this one has no water, fish or Rolex inside.

1964 Rolex Fishbowl Ad

This Rolex Magazine ad from 1964 probably represents the tail end of Rolex communicating waterproofness by using a fish in a fishbowl. Fascinating, uh?!?!

Valentino Rossi
Smokes Marc Márquez @ Sepang
Supercase Ceramic Rolex Submariner

9 Time Moto GP World Champion

Italian born, Valentino Rossi is widely regarded as the greatest Motorcycle racer in the world and in history, having won 9 Moto GP World Championships. In the image below we see Valentino smoking Marc Márquez today @ Sepang. This event was highly controversial, as Valentino Rossi claimed that he was just defending himself.

You tryna' flex on me!!?! Don't be silly!!!

Commenting on today's event Valentino Rossi said:

"You know unfortunately I lost a lot of time with Marc and in turn 14, I tried to go wide to get a better line to make him slow because he just rides to cause me some problems. Unfortunately he came to me and I think he crashed in that moment. It’s a shame because I think that in a normal race we can stay and fight with Jorge and we lost some more points. Valencia will be more difficult."

Valentino Rossi is pictured below wearing his Rolex Submariner with a ceramic bezel. You can learn much more about Valentino's illustrious achievements as the worlds greatest motorcycle racer in my detailed story on his career achievements.

1950s Rolex Submariner Brochure Pic [Reference 6536]

1950s Rolex Submariner Brochure Pic
[Reference 6536]

I couldn't help but notice this late 1950s Rolex Submariner has a blockier case, with thicker lugs, kind of like the newest Ceramic Supercase Submariner. I also noticed in this illustration that the case lacks outer lug holes like the all-new Submariner Supercase. Very Interesting!!!

Rolling Stones Bass Player Bill Wyman Wearing His Trademark GMT Root Beer

...Rolex Super-Coolness...

Bill Wyman
Rolling Stones
Founding Member & Base Player

RootBeer Rolex GMT-Master
Two-Tone Reference 1675

Who is the greatest Rock and Roll band in history? Some would say the Beatles, and some would say the Rolling Stones. The Rolling Stones certainly have much greater longevity, and after all, there is something to be said for longevity and endurance— both of which Rolex and The Rolling Stones have in common. So what happens when you mix together a Rolex and a Rolling Stone? You get Bill Wyman who is one of the original Rolling Stones, and he remains the oldest founding member at 78 years of age today!

Bellow we see two very early photo of the Rolling Stones taken at the Marqee on July 12, 1962.

Bill Wyman is pictured below in the bottom right hand corner. We see (from top to bottom) guitarist Brian Jones on top with the blond hair, and to his right we see lead vocals singer Mick Jagger. On the next row we see keyboardist Ian Stewart, guitarist Keith Richards, drummer Charlie Watts, and bass player Bill Wyman. It is worth noting that JFK was still President of The United States when this photo was taken.

It is worth noting that Ian Robert Stewart was kind of the Pete Best of the Rolling Stones. He was born in 1938 and passed away in 1985. Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham removed him from the Rolling Stones line-up in May of 1963, since he didn't think his image worked well with the Rolling Stones identity. Ian Stewart stayed on as the Rolling sones pianist and road manager, and went on to work with Led Zeppelin.

The Rolling Stones are pictured below in 1964, with Bill Wyman in the middle, in front of Charlie Watts and Ron Wood, and behind Mick Jagger and Brian Jones.

Bill Wyman is pictured below in the later 1960s with fellow Rolling Stones founding band member, (from left to right): Charlie Watts, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Bill Wyman, and Brian Jones. Brian Jones passed away from a drug overdose in 1969.

Mick Jagger and Bill Wyman are pictured below in 1972 on an airplane.

Bill Wyman is pictured below two decades later in the 1980s with fellow Rolling Stones band members, (from left to right): Charlie Watts, Keith Richards (or "Keif", if you have a Michael Caine Cockney Accent :-) Mick Jagger, Ron Wood, and Bill Wyman. Ron Wood joined the Rolling Stones in 1975.

In the photo below we see Bill Wyman sporting his two-ton "RootBeer" Rolex GMT Master, which is a  two-tone Yellow-Gold and Stainless Steel Reference 1675.

It is worth noting that fellow famous bass players, John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin is not only a contemporary of Bill Wyman but wears the exact same two-tone Rolex GMT-Master.

Also, John McVie of Fleetwood Mac fame also wore a GMT-Master, except McVie wears a "Pepsi GMT-Master" as apposed to a "RootBeer GMT-Master".

The photo below is of two-tone Rolex GMT-Master Reference 1675, which I believe is identical to the one Bill Wyman wears.

This mode features nipple indices and a matching gold 24 hour hand. I believe it is the same Rolex Model he is seen wearing in the two photos below, which were both taken in 1975.

This photo above of Bill Wyman was taken in Amsterdam in 1975, and the one below was taken in The United States during the Rolling Stones "1975 Tour Of The Americas".

The photo below is from the cover artwork on the Rolling Stones seminal 1976 Album titled Black and Blue.

Andrew Oldham who was a Rolling Stones former manager once said, "Bill Wyman is the most at peace with himself." Bill Wyman is an amateur archaeologist and has a hobby of Relic hunting.

Bill Wyman is pictured below with his second wife Mandy Smith, and in an ironic twist of fate her mother Patsy is married to Bill Wyman's son, Stephen Wyman. Turns out reality is stranger than fiction.

In the video interview below we see Bill Wyman wearing his Two-Tone Rolex GMT-Master.

In the recent photo below, we see Bill Wyman wearing his Rolex GMT-Master. He has worn this Rolex now for at least 40 years!!!

Bill Wyman retired from the Rolling Stones in 1993, and in 2002 published an amazing book I own, named "Rolling With The Stones". Bill Wyman rejoined the Rolling Stones for their 50th Anniversary in 2012 for one night only.
