...Wrist Shot Of The Day... The All-New Rolex Coolness 2011 "Orange Hand" Polar Rolex Explorer I

...Wrist Shot Of The Day...

The All-New Rolex Coolness
2011 "Orange Hand" Polar Rolex Explorer II

The all new "retro" Rolex Explorer II "Orange Hand" made its formal debut at BaselWorld this year. Rolex actually originally showed it off at BaselWorld a year earlier as a teaser. This all-new Rolex is probably going to become the new Daytona, in the sense that it will likely be difficult to get initially due to very-high demand. What a cool looking watch!!!!

Customized Bamford Rolex Daytona

It's clear John Mayer is sporting a Rolex Daytona, but I originally could not tell if it is a PVD'd out version or if it is some kind of rare prototype?

Update: Dave from Italy is a daily reader of Jake's Rolex World and he wrote in to make a positive ID on John Mayer's Rolex in the photo below. It turns out John Mayer is wearing a customized Bamford and Sons Blacked-Out, Rolex Daytona as seen in the lower photo. Thanks for making the positive ID Dave!!!!

...Outdoor Shot Of The Day... Tommy's Italian Rolex Polar Explorer II Happiness In A Field Of Flowers

...Outdoor Shot Of The Day...

Tommy's Italian Rolex Polar Explorer II

Happiness In A Field Of Flowers

Tommy is a daily reader of Jake's Rolex World and he sent in this amazing photo with the following note:

Hi Jake,

My name is Tommy and i'm from Italy. I read Jake's Rolex World every day, and for me it's like a drug. I enjoy your very interesting stories about Rolex watches and history.

I'm a great fan of Rolex and watches in general (I also read your Patek Philippe Blog ;) and since I was a child I dreamed about having a Rolex, but for me it was very expensive and all the watches I owned were gifts from my parents (Speedmaster, Monaco, Seamaster, Hamilton).

Two days ago my dream became reality, when I bought a Rolex Explorer 2. My Explorer has a white dial and is from 1993, but I am so happy to finally own a Rolex. I feel so happy, like a child with its toy!

I can't describe my happiness, but I think you can imagine it!!!

I took some photos of my Rolex and it would be so cool if you can show this photo of my watch on Jake's Rolex World Blog, which I consider my Holy Bible. If you publish this image of my watch it would take me to Paradiseeeeeeeeeeeeeee! (if you like the photo I took...I'm a poor photographer).

I must say my knowledge of Rolex watches increased significantly since I started reading Jake's Rolex World, and it has also improved my English.

I hope you understand my email, since my English is not so good.

Thanks a lot and good job and good luck for your blog.

Tommy

P.S. Did you ever think about writing a book about the stories you tell on Jake's Rolex World?

I would like to thank you Tommy for sharing your great photo of your beautiful Rolex Explorer II. It is a great photo, and I would also like to thank you for sharing your very kind words regarding Jake's Rolex World.

I must admit, it is readers like you who make me push myself as hard as I can to keep researching and publishing Jake's Rolex World.

People ask me all the time if I plan to publish a book or books about Rolex and the answer is no. Why? Books are so 20th Century! I believe there are so many advantages that publishing on the web has over print publishing.

First and foremost, there is unlimited room on the web, so I can make a story as long as I want, and as I gain new insight, and images, I can easily update all the stories on Jake's Rolex World, whereas with a book, once it is published, that's it.

That being said, I very seriously considered developing an application for the iPad, but after much in-depth research, I concluded, that the web was the ultimate medium, so I optimized all the content on Jake's Rolex World so it looks amazing on an Apple iPad. If you have not checked out Jake's Rolex World on an iPad, do so. It looks great!!! Particularly if you view it in portrait mode.

Hard To Believe!?!? Another Rolex Reference 4113 from John Goldberger The Most Beautiful 4113 In The World!

Hard To Believe!?!?

Another Rolex Reference 4113 from John Goldberger

"The Most Beautiful 4113 In The World!"

This watch is very rare and there are only 8 known examples in existence. Back in 2008, I showcased another example of the elusive Rolex Reference 4113 owned by John Goldberger, and just yesterday, John Goldberger sent me and email and said:

Hi Jake!

I just thought I would show you the most beautiful Rolex Reference 4113 in the World! My friend bought it one month ago.

Ciao John

Record Setting Rolex Auction Price $1.16 Million 1942 Rolex Split-Seconds Chronograph [44mm: Reference 4113]

Record Setting Rolex Auction Price: $1.16 Million
1942 Rolex Split-Seconds Chronograph
[Stainless Steel 44mm: Reference 4113]

On May 16, 2011, Christie's Auction House in Geneva set an all-time record for the selling price of a Rolex when they successfully auctioned a very rare 1942 Rolex Chronograph [Reference 4113] for $1.16 Million. As legend has it, Rolex made 12 of these watches, and there are only 8 known to exist today.

The ethos of this model is shrouded in mystery. As a matter of fact, Rolex never showcased or made this model available to the public, and it was never documented or illustrated in any Rolex collateral material. Christie's suggested it was possible these watches were made as gifts to famous race car drivers and team owners during the early 1940s. Others speculate these watches were made for the Italian Army during World War II.

One of the very interesting features of this rare model it that it is a whopping 44mm, which means it is not quite as large as the 47mm Panerai watches Rolex made during the same era (for the Italian Royal Navy) but pretty large. The Rolex Reference 4113 remains to this day the only split-seconds chronograph Rolex has ever made.

Back in 2008, I showcased another known example of the Rolex 4113.

Here is the Christie's Auction House video of the Rolex Reference 4113

Replaces Charlie Sheen on 2 and a Half Men
White Dial Rolex Milgauss

CBS and Warner Brothers announced today that Ashton Kutcher would be replacing Charlie Sheen on its hit show Two and a Half Men. Ashton Kutcher will not be playing the Role Charlie Sheen played, of Charlie Harper, but he will be playing a new character.

Kutcher is replacing Charlie Sheen, who basically made a complete Jackass out of himself and in doing so gave up lost $2 million per episode he was earning by playing Charlier Harper on 2 and a half men. Charlie Sheen had demanded $3 Million per episode, because he wanted to make $100 Million per year, and CBS passed.

Ashton Kutcher is pictured above wearing his white dial Rolex Milgauss on the Piers Morgan Tonight show recently, and we see Charlie Sheen below, also on the Piers Morgan Tonight Show, when he had one of his meltdowns, wearing a stunningly beautiful Patek Philippe Moonphase.

Charlie Sheen is pictured below, wearing his 3/4 Stainless and Platinum Yacht-Master that he used to wear on the show.

...Supreme Italian Style... Omega Coolness: Gianni Agnelli Ploprof Sea-Master Professional

...Supreme Italian Style...

Omega Coolness: Gianni Agnelli

Ploprof Sea-Master Professional

Earlier this week we learned that Gian Riccardo Marini would be taking over as the new CEO of Rolex in Geneva. This is probably and excellent choice, in that if you study photos of him, you see he has a great sense of classic style. Of course, Gian Riccardo Marini is Italian, and everybody knows Italy is renowned for being perhaps the most stylish country in the world.
Earlier today, I put up a fascinating video interview of Stephen Urquhart, who is the CEO of Omega, which made me think this would be an excellent opportunity to take a look at one of the most stylish Italian men in modern history, Gianni Agnelli.
In this photo taken in 1979 we see billionaire, business tycoon, Gianni Agnelli in St. Moritz and he is sporting his Omega Ploprof Seamaster. Gianni Agnelli is renowned for not only being super-stylish, but for also wearing his watches around the outside of his shirt sleeve. A few weeks ago on Jake's Patek Philippe World, I published another story on Gianni Agnelli sporting his Patek Philippe World Time watch.

As legend has it, Omega developed the Omega PloProf with COMEX and Jacques Cousteau. Essentially, the Omega PloProf Seamaster Professional was developed to compete with the Rolex SEA-DWELLER. Omega formally launched the PloProf in 1970 after 4 years of research and development.
Omega discontinued the PloProf in 1979, and several years ago, the brought the model back to life and named it the Omega SeaMaster Ploprof 1200M–as seen in the two photos below. To learn more about the history of the Omega Ploprof there is a great site dedicated to it named Ploprof.com.

Here is a cool shot of the modern Omega Ploprof with a safety-orange rubber band on it. It has a very sporty, aquatic look to it. I still miss Flipper Fridays ;-(

Omega Coolness: Stephen Urquhart
CEO of Omega Watches

My pal Ariel Adams is the publisher of A Blog To Read and earlier this year, at BaselWorld he had the opportunity to interview Stephen Urquhart, who is the CEO of Omega Watches. I really enjoyed the interview and I was extremely impressed with Stephen Urquhart depth of knowledge, and he certainly is a brilliant conversationalist.

Toward the end of the interview, Stephen Urquhart speaks about Bertrand Piccard's exciting project to build and fly a solar powered airplane around the world.
