Wimbledon 2019: Borg v. McEnroe

Wimbledon 2019

July 1 - July 14, 2019

It's that time of the year again and Wimbledon is in full swing with the finals coming up this weekend!!! Nick Gould sent in this great photo of Gold Legend, Jack Nicklaus attending Wimbledon 2019 while wearing a yellow gold Day-Date with a black dial.

Borg v. McEnroe

1980 Wimbledon

The rivalry between John McEnroe and Björn Borg is one of the greatest in history. Rolex just debuted this really cool video so I thought it would be great to share a little more detail on their relationship.

In the photo below taken back in the early 1980s, we see Björn Borg and John McEnroe and they are both wearing Rolex Datejust watches.

In the photo below from 1980, we see André Heiniger with legendary tennis star Bjorn Borg on June 11. On the evening of Men's singles finals at Wimbledon. The 1980 Wimbledon Men's final match was between Björn Borg and John McEnroe was a dramatic struggle which went on for a long time with Borg prevailing. This amazing photo appears courtesy of SC3.

John McEnroe, Roger Federer & Björn Borg

...Rolex Super-Coolness...

John McEnroe, Roger Federer & Björn Borg

Generations of Wimbledon Champions Wearing Rolex

Roger Federer won the Wimbledon gentlemen's semifinals year before last, and last year he lost in the finals to Novak Djokovic. To date, he is considered to be the greatest tennis player in history, and tomorrow he has another rendezvous with destiny to potentially break another Wimbledon record when he challenges Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon gentleman's finals. To date, Roger Federer is tied with Pete Sampras for having won the greatest number of Wimbledon gentleman's championships at 7 each. If he wins tomorrow, he will stand alone with eight wins.

There are very few men that have won the coveted Wimbledon title multiple times, and in the photo below we see Roger Federer with tennis legends John McEnroe and Björn Borg. McEnroe won Wimbledon three times in 1981, 1983 and 1984. Borg won Wimbledon five times, in 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979 and 1980.

Tomorrow's tournament represents Federer's 26th Grand Slam final. Roger Federer won his first Wimbledon title when he was only 21 years old, eleven years ago on July 6, 2003. Roger Federer is pictured below chatting with fellow tennis legend, Björn Borg.

One of the most outstanding achievements of Roger Federer's career is that unlike John McEnroe and Björn Borg, Federer never stopped playing world-class tennis. Both John McEnroe and Björn Borg never won a major tennis tournament after the age of 25, yet Roger has and continues to play superb tennis. As Frank Sinatra once said, "Good things endure."

...Now & Then...

John McEnroe and Björn Borg

John McEnroe and Björn Borg have remained friends over the decades and we see them below in a recent photo.

In the photo below taken back in the early 1980s, we see Björn Borg and John McEnroe and they are both wearing Rolex Datejust watches.

In the photo below we see Björn Borg with fellow tennis legends, Vitas Gerulaitus and John McEnroe, and we see McEnroe wearing his Rolex Datejust.

Björn Borg is considered to be on of the greatest and most iconic professional tennis players in history.

In the photo below taken four decades ago we see Björn Borg sporting a Rolex Datjust on a Jubilee bracelet.

In the recently taken photos below we see Björn Borg sporting a two-tone Rolex Submariner.

Borg, Gerulatus and McEnroe...

Borg, Gerulatus and McEnroe
Three 1970s Tennis Greats

All of this Wimbledon excitement is great and Roger Federer wearing his stainless Rolex Datejust II on an Oyster bracelet made me think of this image where John McEnroe is wearing his stainless steel Rolex Datejust, with Vitas Gerulaitus and Bjorn Borg behind him. I am pretty certain Geulaitus and Borg also wore Rolex watches. McEnroe also won Wimbledon.
