Hi Everybody!!!

It is hard to believe it is already Thanksgiving again on Jake's Rolex World!!! It has been another absolutely amazing year filled with growth and fascinating new Rolex historical content!!! I am now in my 15th year of publishing Jake's Rolex World and I still feel like I am just getting warmed-up with Rolex history. I have many, many more exciting pieces of the Rolex history puzzle to share with you in the future, as well as some major announcements coming up...

2022 has been another really bizarre year for everybody—but nonetheless, I am very grateful to have so many great readers all over the world and I hope you have found some solace and inspiration in all the amazing Rolex history I have shared with you. So many of you have written in over the years to help correct my typos, as well as to share your valuable insight and enthusiasm, for which I am eternally grateful!

Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday as it gives us a chance to pause and reflect on how fortunate we all are to be able to experience this amazing miracle, known as life, on this spinning marble we all share–named Earth.

I recently completed my new studio, and shot my first Rolex video for my JAKEeSHOW, and am currently working on editing my second episode, which I plan to publish soon...In case you missed my first Rolex episode, I am including it below...

As many of you know, I have been working for some time now on a series of dozen books that cover the entire Rolex history arc. I plan to start rolling out my 12 volumes next year, with Volume 1 dropping in late Q1 of 2023, with each following volume releasing on a rolling quarterly basis, which means I expect to publish the final volume in Q4 of 2025.

This year I have a special Thanksgiving gift for you! I am working on my review of the epic new documentary named Becoming Cousteau, and hope to have it done soon—and in the meantime you can get a detailed preview in the story below this one. I am extremely grateful for this documentary which ads many of the missing puzzle pieces in telling his amazing lifetime story. Below is a teaser image from my review and it shows Jacques-Yves Cousteau rocking his prototype Submariner back in 1953 around this time of year while he was filming his critically acclaimed Academy Award Winning aquatic documentary named The Silent World, while conducting real world testing with his Calypso team divers.

Of course, I realize Thanksgiving is a U.S. holiday, but I believe it's as timeless and universal as a sunset or a smile :-)))

Publishing Jake's Rolex World

I began publishing Jake's Rolex World back on May 7, 2008, and It's hard to believe I am entering my 10th year of publishing!?!! So I thought I would take this opportunity to reflect back on the past decade, as well as to look forward to the future. If you want a good laugh, you can take a look at what Jake's Rolex World looked like on the first day I publish it back on May 7, 2008. I started Jake's Rolex World for several reasons. My love for Rolex began thirty-five years ago, when I fell madly in love with the Rolex Submariner. Don't ask me how, but  I figured out how to purchase a Rolex Submariner when I was 16 years old. 

Once I had my Rolex Submariner, I spent countless hours studying its timeless beauty, and for the next quarter-century, I tried to learn as much as I could about Rolex and its history. Learning anything really meaningful about Rolex's history was a challenge, as there was not much out there in the way of quality historical material. This was ironic in the sense Rolex really hit its Apex or Zenith point on the reputation curve in the 1980s. In other words, Rolex went from being a company that struggled to reach the top—up until the early 1980s—to a company that had arrived. The irony is that somehow Rolex managed to become one of the top brands in the world, while almost remaining in stealth mode. Of course, this all occurred in a pre-internet world, but looking back in the rear-view mirror of history, it appears Rolex was just kind of shy in a typically Swiss kind of way.

Over the quarter-century prior to publishing Jake's Rolex World (ten years ago), I had owned eight different Rolex watches. [That means I typically got a new Rolex every three years.] Ten years ago, I bought a 50th Anniversary LV Submariner, which featured the green bezel insert, and marked the return of the maxi marker. The wrist shot above shows my LV Submariner on my wrist.

When I purchased my LV Submariner, I did a lot of research about the model on the web, and I kept wandering into posts on RolexForums.com. I remember being shocked with how many pathetic men there were on RolexForums.com, who were incessantly talking about Rolex watches. I remember feeling bad for all these men, who had nothing better to do with their time than talk about Rolex. I remember I kept running into threads that had posts from a guy named J.J. Irani, and I could not help but notice he had more than 50,000 posts on RolexForums.com!!??!! The small photo below was J.J. Irani's avatar picture which seriously Deja Vu's me out when I look at it today.

I ended up lurking on RolexForums.com for several months. I was fascinated with much of the content, but kept feeling bad for all these poor souls, whose lives seemed to revolve around their relationships with other dudes on the forum. Then one day, somebody created a post on RolexForums that I knew the answer to, but nobody else answered it. Next thing you know, I created an account, signed in, and proudly answered the question. The next thing you know, I became one of these men who was going crazy chatting non-stop about Rolex on the Rolex Forum. As time went by, I ended up becoming pals with J.J. Irani, who is pictured below.

J.J. Irani was an amazing man!!! In many ways he was almost the mascot for RolexForums.com. J.J. Irani was a really funny dude. He was from New Zealand, and had a very boisterous personality. He was always kidding around with forum members like Jocke, who was from Sweden. I used to kid around with J.J., and I put together the image below that put J.J., in a photo from a Twilight Zone episode that featured William Shatner, which was titled "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet." If you are familiar with that Twilight Zone Episode, you will recall that William Shatner's character (Pre Star-Trek), kept seeing a crazy creature out on the airplanes wing, who was chewing on power cables. I superimposed J.J.'s image in place, giving the thumbs-up while drinking a beer, wearing his beloved two-tone Rolex Submariner.

Several years after I joined the RolexForums.com, J.J. Irani became ill and died, leaving so many forum members, including me, in complete shock. To this day, whenever I think about or see a photo of J.J. it is bittersweet. Looking at him, makes me happy and sad at the same time. More than anything, looking at him cheers me up, as I remember how upbeat and positive his personality was. The image below ironically shows a post from J.J. Irani, in a thread about the Every Rolex Tells a Story booklet: 

I use the word 'ironic', as I am not only sharing my Rolex story, but J.J.'s as well. Notice in the screen shot above, that by the time J.J. passed away, he had posted almost 75,000 times on RolexForums.com!!!! Of course, the memory and posts of J.J. Irani, will likely remain forever on RolexForums.com. On a positive note, this kind of illustrates the power of the internet as a story-telling platform, as well as a social networking platform. In other words, the web opened up a whole new world of possibilities for fans of Rolex...

As a member of RolexForums.com, I became kind of obsessed with checking out photos of famous people wearing Rolex watches, so I started a thread named, "Definitive Famous People Wearing Rolex Photo Collection." The thread became a huge overnight success, and forum members got really into it, as did I. I went crazy posting photos of famous people wearing Rolex watches, and my first image was this classic image of Paul Newman wearing his trademark Rolex Daytona.

My thread about famous people wearing Rolex garnered much attention, and there was a moderator on RolexForums.com, who kept messing with me, telling me I was getting too carried away with posting photos of famous people as well as images of how I thought Rolex watches should look. He told me I needed to slow my roll. He told me I made myself the center of attention, but that since I was so new to the forum, I needed to curb my enthusiasm. He literally drove me nuts, constantly haranguing me for no apparent reason. I thought he was ridiculous, and we ended getting in a confrontation, which resulted in my telling him to stop bothering me in a somewhat forceful way. To make a long story short, the powers that be banned me!?!!

I though they were crazy. I made all these great friends on the RolexForums, and created one of the best and most intriguing threads, and they ban me!?!?! I remember begging them to lift my ban, and they refused. I even reached out to J.J. Irani, and spoke with him on the phone, but even he could not help me. I was frustrated beyond belief, and after a few days, I got an idea. I thought, why not create my own Rolex blog, where I could post whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted, without having to deal with a bizarre political structure that made no sense to me. Thus I started publishing Jake's Rolex World on May 8, 2008.

I remember wondering to myself at the time if it was such a good idea to try and create blog about a company that only had 5 or 6 trademark watches? But I thought, to myself, why not give it a try, and if I  run out of content, then that would be o.k. I also wanted to start Jake's Rolex World to get all the Rolex information I had stored in my head, onto metaphorical paper, so I could share it with the world. On a positive note, about six months after I started Jake's Rolex World, RolexForums.com ended up lifting my ban...

So let's fast-forward to today. Over the course of the last nine years, I have posted more than 3500 Rolex Stories on Jake's Rolex World, which is pretty amazing if you think about it. In telling these Rolex stories, I have basically busted every major Rolex myth that has ever been falsely perpetuated over the past several decades. I have also written many in-depth multi-part stories about all the major Rolex models. As a matter of fact, my story named "The Complete History Of The Rolex Submariner & SEA-DWELLER: Rolex's Conquest Of The Ocean", is already 20 Chapters long. In other words, I have published the equivalent of a super-detailed Rolex Encyclopedia. Some people have even referred to Jake's Rolex World as the Wikipedia of Rolex...

Perhaps the obvious question, is what's next? What are the plans for this 10th year of publication, what about the next decade? I plan to keep going, and hope to expand the coverage, and scope of Jake's Rolex World, by bringing additional writers on-board, as well as completing a user-interface overhaul, which will make all of the amazing Rolex history content much more engaging to explore. I also plan to start publishing more detailed video interviews and documentaries on Rolex related topics.

I would also like to point out that over the years I have met many, many fine people and made many great friends as a result of publishing Jake's Rolex World. The Maurice Chevalier Rolex ad from 1964, pictured below, pretty much sums it all up...As Maurice points out, Rolex watches are not only great timepieces, but also great conversation pieces.

Also, I would like to personally thank all of my readers and supporters for helping to make Jake's Rolex World what it is today. Over the years so many readers have written in to help by providing valuable photos, insight, and often times to point out a typo I overlooked. In the final analysis, Jake's Rolex World is really about the readers, of which I am one. In other words, almost every day, after I get done publishing, I end-up wandering the whispers of Jake's Rolex World, which never ceases to engage me on so many different levels. 

I am working on many new fascinating Rolex stories that I look forward to publishing in the future. I also believe that despite the fact I have already published, so much, I think the best is yet to come!!!!

Hi Everybody!!!

It is hard to believe it is already Thanksgiving again on Jake's Rolex Watch Blog!!! It has been another absolutely amazing year of filled with growth and amazing new Rolex historical content. Since last Thanksgiving I have met many new international readers and made many new and exiting friends.

I even started Jake's Patek Philippe World Blog as well as Jake's Who Knew World Blog. I publish all my blogs more as notebooks for my interest, and as the CEO and Designer at BulletTrain, I also publish the BulletBlog by JakeE. As you can imagine, I have so much to be grateful for and I wish all my readers a happy Thanksgiving!!!!

My name is Tommy and i'm from Italy. I read Jake's Rolex World every day, and for me it's like a drug. I enjoy your very interesting stories about Rolex watches and history.

I'm a great fan of Rolex and watches in general (I also read your Patek Philippe Blog ;) and since I was a child I dreamed about having a Rolex, but for me it was very expensive and all the watches I owned were gifts from my parents (Speedmaster, Monaco, Seamaster, Hamilton).

Two days ago my dream became reality, when I bought a Rolex Explorer 2. My Explorer has a white dial and is from 1993, but I am so happy to finally own a Rolex. I feel so happy, like a child with its toy!

I can't describe my happiness, but I think you can imagine it!!!

I took some photos of my Rolex and it would be so cool if you can show this photo of my watch on Jake's Rolex World Blog, which I consider my Holy Bible. If you publish this image of my watch it would take me to Paradiseeeeeeeeeeeeeee! (if you like the photo I took...I'm a poor photographer).

I must say my knowledge of Rolex watches increased significantly since I started reading Jake's Rolex World, and it has also improved my English.

I must admit, it is readers like you who make me push myself as hard as I can to keep researching and publishing Jake's Rolex World.

People ask me all the time if I plan to publish a book or books about Rolex and the answer is no. Why? Books are so 20th Century! I believe there are so many advantages that publishing on the web has over print publishing.

First and foremost, there is unlimited room on the web, so I can make a story as long as I want, and as I gain new insight, and images, I can easily update all the stories on Jake's Rolex World, whereas with a book, once it is published, that's it.

That being said, I very seriously considered developing an application for the iPad, but after much in-depth research, I concluded, that the web was the ultimate medium, so I optimized all the content on Jake's Rolex World so it looks amazing on an Apple iPad. If you have not checked out Jake's Rolex World on an iPad, do so. It looks great!!! Particularly if you view it in portrait mode.

I imagine it was just a matter of time, and I finally decided to start Jake's Patek Philippe World Blog. I first became aware of the Rolex brand when I was 15 years old, back in 1981. At the time, I was aware already aware of Patek Philippe because my father and grandfather both wore Patek Philippe watches.
Over the past several years, Jake's Rolex World has become the definitive guide for the world of Rolex and I intend to achieve the same standard with Jake's Patek Philippe World. If you are not familiar with the Patek Philippe watch brand it can be argued that if Rolex is the Mercedes of watches, Patek Philippe is the Rolls Royce of watches.

One of the primary differences between the two brands is that Patek Philippe watches are primarily dressy watches, and Rolex tend to be more sporty. Or course Patek Philippe makes sporty watches and Rolex makes dressy watches, but I would say that is the main differentiator. Also Patek Philippe watches tend to be much more expensive. Patek Philippe watches typically have the GENEVÉ seal, and Rolex watches typically have the C.O.S.C. seal.
The GENEVÉ seal requires a tremendous amount of hand finishing, with rules that say things like the watch cannot have any right angles on the outside or inside. Rolex watches tend to be very accurate timekeepers because of the C.O.S.C. seal.
Some people say that Rolex is all about the outside and Patek Philippe is all about the inside. They say this because it is very common for Patek Philippe watches to come standard with a synthetic sapphire exhibition caseback which allows you to see the typically beautiful and ornate movement, and Rolex has never made watches with exhibition casebacks as a standard item. It has been argued that Rolex movements are simple in design since they are designed to be tool-watch workhorses.
As different as Patek Philippe and Rolex are, they also share many similarities. Patek Philippe is one of the last family owned, independent watchmakers located in Geneva, Switzerland. Rolex is owned by the Hans Wilsdorf Trust, which was left to his existing family members as the beneficiaries, which still kind of makes it family owned.
Also people who like Rolex typically enjoy Patek Philippe, and visa versa. Many of the worlds top horilogical collectors are Patek Philippe and Rolex aficionados. Also, at most watch auctions world-wide, Rolex and Patek Philippe are always the high-performance stars.

Truth be told, the reason I have always worked so hard on Jake's Rolex World is for three reasons:

1. I realize if I did not capture this amazing Rolex history, it is likely it would be lost forever, and in my mind that would be an absolute shame!!!

2. I love it!!! I love the education I get from researching all the stories. I am utterly fascinated with history and often times I feel like Indiana Jones when I go exploring all this rich history.

3. Last but not least, I work so hard because I know my readers also like the history, photos and editorial as much as I like capturing and sharing it.

I have said many times before, if there just one reader of Jake's Rolex World on planet earth that enjoyed it, I would keep publishing it, and I know there are many people who enjoy it.

People often ask me what motivates me to capture all this amazing Rolex history?

First and foremost, I find it to be absolutely fascinating!!!! I am probably the biggest fan of reading Jake's Rolex World. I realize this sounds strange, but often times I love to get lost in these amazing historical worlds!!!

Secondly, I realize if I don't capture this amazing Rolex history, it will be lost forever, and that would be an absolute shame.

Last, but not least, I love all the friends I have made all over the planet, and if I knew there was only one other person on planet earth that enjoyed my research, writing and photo layouts as much as I do, it would all make it worth while. That being said, Greg Carrara is a huge fan of Jake's Rolex World and he just sent in this amazing holiday note:

for iPad & iPhone Viewing

Hi Everybody,

As many of you know, I was extremely excited for the iPad to come out since I knew it would completely revolutionize the viewing experience and quality of Jake's Rolex World and actually make it into a world-class digital magazine that was also very good for the environment.

When the iPad first came out, the first thing I did was check out Jake's Rolex World and it was one of the biggest disappointments of my life!!! The iPad was amazing, but Jake's Rolex World looked terrible and kept crashing the iPad!!!

The challenge was that in trying to make Jake's Rolex World future-proof, I over-shot the mark quite a bit!!!

Unfortunately, I have had to completely redesign the html infrastructure and UI which is terribly time consuming and challenging and required a lot of math skills I typically don't use.

The great news is that doing so was a blessing in disguise and now Jake's Rolex World is looking better and loading faster than ever on the desktop, on laptops, as well as on the iPad and iPhone!!!

There are four phases to optimizing Jake's Rolex World and as I complete each phase, I will update it here:

• Phase 1: Figure out what was wrong and how to fix it!!! This was not easy and my brain is still hurting from all the math and experimenting with the User Interface. The challenge is that I did not want the new user interface to simply work on the iPad and iPhone, I wanted it to look and work perfectly. I also did not want to waste a single pixel. The biggest challenge was making certain it looked great on the desktop and on laptops as well as on the iPad and iPhone. (Status: Complete)
• Phase 2: Redesign and resize all page and UI elements to optimally fit on the iPad and iPhone screen. (Status: Complete) Having completed this means Jake's Rolex World is not viewable on an iPad and iPhone with the following exceptions:
• Phase 3: Redesign all story view shortcuts that appear on all pages on the sidebar (Status: Complete)
• Phase 4: Take all large stories and break them into multiple segments so the iPad and iPhone won't crash on them. (Status: In Progress)
