INXS Lead Singer Michael Hutchence

We could live for a thousand years...

...but if I hurt you I'd make wine from your tears..

INXS

Michael Hutchence

Lead Singer

1960-1997

When I nostalgically think back to the 1980s and 1990s there are few bands that epitomize that time more than INXS which was an Australian band. INXS's often upbeat fleeting rock ballads remain haunting and ephemeral to this day in the strangest of ways...

Michael Hutchence was the lead singer of who reminded me of Jim Morrison from THE DOORS, not only because of their common long wavy hair, or amazing singing style, or great looks, but because they both died young. Michael Hutchence is pictured below on a train posting for the camera and notice he is wearing a Rolex Submariner.

Michael Hutchence is pictured below with Jimmy Barnes who was a songwriter for INXS and notice Barnes is wearing his Rolex Day-Date.

Below we see one of INXS' last live concerts before Michael Hutchence passed away.

The First Rolex Submariner 1922 Hermetically Sealed Pre-Oyster

...In The Time Before Rolex Oyster Time...

The First Rolex Submariner
1922 Hermetically Sealed Pre-Oyster

The Rolex Submariner is the most iconic watch ever made, and its origins are absolutely fascinating. The photo below is of a 1922 Rolex Submarine, which is a hermetically sealed Pre-Oyster, waterproof watch. This is an extremely rare example in pristine condition. You can learn much, much more about the history of the Rolex Submariner in my 19 part series named "The Complete History Of The Rolex Submariner & SEA-DWELLER. Rolex's Conquest Of The Ocean."

Although Rolex perfected the Rolex Oyster waterproof watch case in 1926, it had been working on perfecting a waterproof case for many years prior, and the Rolex Submarine which was made in 1922 (seen above and below) was waterproof, but it did not have a very high depth rating, and in order to access the watch to wind or change the time, you had to screw-off the top fluted bezel, which over time would wear, and was not so easy, yet it was effective. You can learn, much, much more about how Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex revolutionized the wrist-watch in the early 20th century by checking out my story named, "The Complete History Of Rolex Leadership. Part 1: The Hans Wilsdorf Years: Founder Of Rolex."

Dr. Albert Sabin Polio Vaccine Developer

...Rolex Super Doctor...

Dr. Albert Sabin
1906-1993
Oral Polio Vaccine Developer
Rolex Datejust on Oyster Bracelet

Dr. Albert Sabin is best known for his development of the live-virus Polio Vaccine, which is taken orally. His pioneering research on viral diseases and viruses resulted in primary defense agains polio in the United States, and throughout most of the world.

The following details appears courtesy of WikiPedia.com:

With the menace of polio growing, Sabin and other researchers, most notably Jonas Salk in Pittsburgh and Hilary Koprowski and Herald Cox in New York and Philadelphia, sought a vaccine to prevent or mitigate the illness. The Sabin vaccine is an oral vaccine containing weakened forms of strains of polio viruses. They stimulate the body defences against polio without causing the disease. In 1955, Salk's "killed" vaccine was released for use. It was effective in preventing most of the complications of polio, but did not prevent the initial intestinal infection.

The Sabin vaccine is easier to give than the earlier vaccine developed by Salk in 1954, and its effects last longer. In addition, those who received the Salk vaccine could pass on the polio virus. Sabin first tested his live attenuated oral vaccine at the Chillicothe Ohio Reformatory in late 1954. From 1956-1960, he worked with Russian colleagues to perfect the oral vaccine and prove its extraordinary effectiveness and safety.

The Sabin vaccine worked in the intestines to block the poliovirus from entering the bloodstream. In the intestines, Sabin had discovered, the poliovirus multiplied and attacked. Thus, the oral vaccine broke the chain of transmission of the virus and allowed for the possibility that polio might one day be eradicated.

Between 1955 and 1961, the oral vaccine was tested on at least 100 million people in the USSR, parts of Eastern Europe, Singapore, Mexico, and the Netherlands. The first industrial production and mass use of oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) from Sabin strains was organized by Soviet scientist Mikhail Chumakov.[3][4]

This provided the critical impetus for allowing large-scale clinical trials of OPV in the United States in April 1960 on 180,000 Cincinnati school children. The mass immunization techniques that Sabin pioneered with his associates effectively eradicated polio in Cincinnati. Against considerable opposition from the March of Dimes Foundation, which supported the relatively effective killed vaccine, Sabin prevailed on the Public Health Service to license his three strains of vaccine. While the PHS stalled, the USSR sent millions of doses of the oral vaccine to places with polio epidemics, such as Japan, and reaped the humanitarian benefit. Indeed, it was not clear to many that the vaccine was an American one, financed by U.S. dollars, but not available to ordinary Americans.

Sabin also developed vaccines against other viral diseases, including encephalitis and dengue. In addition, he investigated possible links between viruses and some forms of cancer.

....Rolex Time Machine...1965...The Sydney Morning Herald

....Rolex Time Machine...

1965

The Sydney Morning Herald

Jose from Perezcope.com recently discovered this super-fascinating Rolex ad which was originally published in the Sydney Morning Herald on Tuesday, December 7, 1965. The shockingly insight that caught me by surprise is that if you read the text next to the illustration of the GMT-Master it says the GMT is the Official watch of James Bond!?!!

Be sure to click on image below to significantly enlarge text for easy reading:

I genuinely have no idea what this means as Thunderball was the James Bond movie in 1965 and we see in the movie poster below it shows Sean Connery as James Bond rocking his trademark Submariner—which is clearly NOT a GMT-Master!?!!

I know Rik Van Nutter wore a GMT-Master on the set of Thunderball as seen in the photo below as he played James Bond's handler, Felix Leiter. Nick Gould and I discussed this and believe it is likely Rolex Australia confused the GMT-Master with the Submariner.

Update: Mark Rackley wrote in and and said:

Jake:

Another possibility for the Sydney Morning Herald referring to the GMT as the official watch of James Bond might be more to the movie series and not Bond himself - e.g. the GMT worn by Pussy Galore in Goldfinger in 1964.

Just a thought.

Mark Rackley

I think Mark may have figured out this puzzle as we see with this Rolex Goldfinger movie poster featuring Pussy Galore shows her rocking her GMT-Master.

1962 Stein Eriksen Rolex Explorer Skiing Ad

Stein Eriksen

1927-2015

Rolex Explorer Skiing Ad
Winter Olympics Skiing Gold Medal Winner

Jean-Claude Killy's is the man people think of when they think of Rolex and Skiing, but the best Olympic Skier prior to Killy, was is Stein Eriksen. It is fascinating to realize that J.F.K., was the President Of The United States when this 1962 Rolex Explorer ad was published in magazines!!!

In the two photo below, we see Stein Eriken with his grandson, and we see him wearing his Rolex Explorer II.

"Be tough, be confident, but you will never be a whole person if you aren't humble."
–Stein Eriksen

Stein Eriksen was born in Norway and lived an amazing life!!! In the 1952 Winter Olympics, held in Oslo, Norway, he won the gold medal for Giant Slalom and Silver for Slalom. Stein Eriksen was born in 1927 and passed away in December 2015. The photo of him below taken at age 83!!!

Stein Eriksen was also the first man to win three gold medals at the world championship which was held 61 years ago in Are in Sweden. He was the first skier to win Gold, in Slalom, Giant Slalom and Downhill at a single World Championship held in 1954.

Growing up Stein Eriksen was a gymnast which he incorporated into his skiing skills and he was the first skiing superstar. He is pictured below in the early 1950s. Stein Eriksen was a pioneer in modern skiing and his elegant skiing technique where he kept his legs, skis and boots together is considered to have have revolutionized freestyle skiing.

With his gymnastics background, Stein Eriksen is renowned for inventing the freestyle skiing areal, which went on to become a freestyle skiing event.

Since Stein Eriksen was the pioneer of ariels, he must have seriously freaked-out spectators!!!

After Stein Eriken retired from professional skiing, he moved to the United States and served as the Director Of Skiing at Deer Valley Resort located in Park City, Utah.

Rush Limbaugh Belongs To The Ages

Rush Limbaugh

Belongs To The Ages

1951-2021

Rush Limbaugh passed away today at the age of 70. Rush was an prolific conservative radio personality who had a nationally syndicated TV show from 1992 to 1996. Rush tended to be outspoken on many different issues and ironically lost his hearing ability in 2001, which explains the device seen above his ear in the photo above. Rush's death was attributed by his wife as being related to lung cancer from smoking cigarettes and cigars.

Rush Limbaugh wore a number of different Rolex watches including a yellow gold Day-Date (pictured above), as well as a Rolex Day-Date Masterpiece with a meteorite dial with diamonds as we see on his wrist in the photo below as well as in the first photo in this story.

Rolling Stones Bass Player Bill Wyman Wearing His Trademark GMT Root Beer

...Rolex Super-Coolness...

Bill Wyman

Rolling Stones
Founding Member & Base Player

RootBeer Rolex GMT-Master
Two-Tone Reference 1675

Who is the greatest Rock and Roll band in history? Some would say the Beatles, and some would say the Rolling Stones. The Rolling Stones certainly have much greater longevity, and after all, there is something to be said for longevity and endurance—both of which Rolex and The Rolling Stones have in common. So what happens when you mix together a Rolex and a Rolling Stone? You get Bill Wyman who is one of the original Rolling Stones, and he remains the oldest founding member at 84 years of age today!

Bellow we see two very early photo of the Rolling Stones taken at the Marquee on July 12, 1962.

Bill Wyman is pictured below in the bottom right hand corner. We see (from top to bottom) guitarist Brian Jones on top with the blond hair, and to his right we see lead vocals singer Mick Jagger. On the next row we see keyboardist Ian Stewart, guitarist Keith Richards, drummer Charlie Watts, and bass player Bill Wyman. It is worth noting that JFK was still President of The United States when this photo was taken.

It is worth noting that Ian Robert Stewart was kind of the Pete Best of the Rolling Stones. He was born in 1938 and passed away in 1985. Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham removed him from the Rolling Stones line-up in May of 1963, since he didn't think his image worked well with the Rolling Stones identity. Ian Stewart stayed on as the Rolling sones pianist and road manager, and went on to work with Led Zeppelin.

The Rolling Stones are pictured below in 1964, with Bill Wyman in the middle, in front of Charlie Watts and Ron Wood, and behind Mick Jagger and Brian Jones.

Bill Wyman is pictured below in the later 1960s with fellow Rolling Stones founding band member, (from left to right): Charlie Watts, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Bill Wyman, and Brian Jones. Brian Jones passed away from a drug overdose in 1969.

Mick Jagger and Bill Wyman are pictured below in 1972 on an airplane.

Bill Wyman is pictured below two decades later in the 1980s with fellow Rolling Stones band members, (from left to right): Charlie Watts, Keith Richards (or "Keif", if you have a Michael Caine Cockney Accent :-) Mick Jagger, Ron Wood, and Bill Wyman. Ron Wood joined the Rolling Stones in 1975.

In the photo below we see Bill Wyman sporting his two-ton "RootBeer" Rolex GMT Master, which is a  two-tone Yellow-Gold and Stainless Steel Reference 1675.

It is worth noting that fellow famous bass players, John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin is not only a contemporary of Bill Wyman but wears the exact same two-tone Rolex GMT-Master.

Also, John McVie of Fleetwood Mac fame also wore a GMT-Master, except McVie wears a "Pepsi GMT-Master" as apposed to a "RootBeer GMT-Master".

The photo below is of two-tone Rolex GMT-Master Reference 1675, which I believe is identical to the one Bill Wyman wears.

This mode features nipple indices and a matching gold 24 hour hand. I believe it is the same Rolex Model he is seen wearing in the two photos below, which were both taken in 1975.

This photo above of Bill Wyman was taken in Amsterdam in 1975, and the one below was taken in The United States during the Rolling Stones "1975 Tour Of The Americas".

The photo below is from the cover artwork on the Rolling Stones seminal 1976 Album titled Black and Blue.

Andrew Oldham who was a Rolling Stones former manager once said, "Bill Wyman is the most at peace with himself." Bill Wyman is an amateur archaeologist and has a hobby of Relic hunting.

Bill Wyman is pictured below with his second wife Mandy Smith, and in an ironic twist of fate her mother Patsy is married to Bill Wyman's son, Stephen Wyman. Turns out reality is stranger than fiction.

Bill Wyman is pictured below with his current wife, Suzanne Accosta and notice she is wearing a ladies Rolex Datejust.

In the video interview below we see Bill Wyman wearing his Two-Tone Rolex GMT-Master.

In the recent photo below, we see Bill Wyman wearing his Rolex GMT-Master. He has worn this Rolex now for at least 40 years!!!

Bill Wyman retired from the Rolling Stones in 1993, and in 2002 published an amazing book I own, named "Rolling With The Stones". Bill Wyman rejoined the Rolling Stones for their 50th Anniversary in 2012 for one night only.
