NASA Photo Of The Day: Ash and Lightning Above an Icelandic Volcano

NASA Photo Of The Day
Ash and Lightning Above an Icelandic Volcano

As many of you know, many parts of Europe have been a no-fly-zone due to a recent Icelandic volcanic explosion.

NASA Explains: Why did the recent volcanic eruption in Iceland create so much ash? Although the large ash plume was not unparalleled in its abundance, its location was particularly noticeable because it drifted across such well populated areas.

The Eyjafjallajökull volcano in southern Iceland began erupting on March 20, with a second eruption starting under the center of small glacier on April 14. Neither eruption was unusually powerful.

The second eruption, however, melted a large amount of glacial ice which then cooled and fragmented lava into gritty glass particles that were carried up with the rising volcanic plume. Pictured above two days ago, lightning bolts illuminate ash pouring out of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano.

NASA Earth Shot Of The Day: Guinea-Bissau West Africa...

NASA Earth Shot Of The Day
Guinea-Bissau West Africa
Amazing NASA Desktop Wallpaper

I am really enjoying the NASA images that are taken from Satellites. This next NASA stunner description reads:

"The Landsat 7 image of Guinea-Bissau, a small country in West Africa, shows the complex patterns of the country's shallow costal waters, where silt is carried by the Geba and other rivers washes out into the Atlantic Ocean. This is a false-color composite image made using infrared, red and blue wavelengths to bring out details in the silt was taken using Landsat 7's Enhanced Thematic Mapper plus (ETM+) sensor on January 12, 2000."

If you click on the first image below it will give you an image that is 1600 x 1600 pixels. For those of you who have the amazing new Apple 27inch iMac or a widescreen, I prepared a stunning higher resolution version which is 2560 x 1440.

It's fascinating how similar this image looks to some kind of living organism–and of course, it is–if you think about it!!!

NASA Coolness: Himalayan Mountains
Amazing NASA Desktop Wallpaper

This is a crazy-stunning-cool photo from NASA of the Himalayan mountains that was taken on April 12, 2001. The NASA description reads:

"Soaring, snow-capped peaks and ridges of the eastern Himalaya Mountains create an irregular white-on-red patchwork between major rivers in southwestern China. The Himalayas are made up of three parallel mountain ranges that together extend more than 2,900 Kilometers."

If you click on the first image below it will give you an image that is 1600 x 1600 pixels. For those of you who have the amazing new Apple 27inch iMac I prepared a higher resolution version which is 2560 x 1440.

NASA Hubble Telescope in 3D

NASA Hubble Telescope in IMAX 3D

On Jake's Rolex Watch Blog we spend much time exploring earth, from the DEEP-SEA to the mountains and of course, the heavens. We are also have a feature with some really cool NASA desktop wallpaper which you can find by clicking the NASA Desktop Wallpaper label at the bottom of this post.

Anything having to do with NASA's Space Shuttle missions is always fascinating and the subject of Rolex watches being worn in Space is always interesting, like one of NASA's most decorated astronauts, Leroy Chaio who wore his Pepsi GMT on 4 Space Shuttle missions, including the one where he flew on the Space Shuttle to The International Space Station to lead Expedition 10, which allowed him to live on the International Space Station for 6.5 Months.

This special IMAX movie required a special 700-pound IMAX camera that shot from a single, mile-long strip of film!!! That is a lot of film!!!!

This High Definition IMAX NASA video preview is mind-boggling as it covers NASA's Space Shuttle Atlantis attempts to repair the Hubble Telescope. If you have the new 21.5 inch or 27 inch Apple iMac, you definitely want to check out this stunning HD footage in full screen–and turn the volume way up!!!!

Desktop Wallpaper: Hubble R136

Hubble Space Desktop Wallpaper

On Jake's Rolex Watch Blog we spend much time exploring outer and inner space. I love checking out high-resolution NASA images from the unbelievable Hubble telescope so I decided to ad a new feature where we will explore incredible NASA images which I optimize for use as desktop wallpaper.

This stunning NASA Hubble was taken by the Wide Field Camera 3 aboard NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and it reveals a massive star cluster nestled in the largest known stellar nursery in our local galactic neighborhood. This massive stellar grouping is named R136 and is only a few million years old and resides within the 30 Doradus Nebula, which is a turbulent star-birth region in the Large Magallanic Cloud (LMC) which is a satellite galaxy of our Milky Way Galaxy.

If you click on the first image below it will give you an image that is 1600 x 900 pixels. For those of you who have the amazing new Apple 27inch iMac I prepared a higher resolution version which is 2560 x 1440.

The image below is 1600 x 900 pixels so I am showing it zoomed in 100%, just so you can see all of the stunning detail. If you want to see even more beautiful detail, click on the green link above the first image that says 2560 x 1440 pixels.
