... Vintage Rolex Hotness...

Ali MacGraw

1968 Cartier Boutique Rolex Ad

There is nothing cooler in the world of Rolex spotting than discovering a famous person in a vintage Rolex ad rocking a Rolex. It's rare, but it happens. Nicolas from Adpatina.com just discovered this AMAZING Carier Boutique Rolex ad from 1968 which features a young Ali MacGraw clad in Bill Blass while sporting her ladies Rolex Oyster in Stainless Steel. Adpatina.com specializes in selling original vintage Rolex magazine advertisements both framed and unframed!

We know vintage Rolex watches are going through the stratosphere in price, so many people like owning vintage ads, which are far less expensive, but will likely continue going up in price over the upcoming years.

The ad above which features Ali MacGraw when she was a model in 1968. No so long after she became a famous actress and started dating fellow actor, Steve McQueen who she is pictured with below in 1972.

In an ironic twist of fate Steve is wearing the same Rolex Submariner [Reference 5512] model seen in the ad sans the Cartier logo and he married Ali!

Nick Gould discovered the photo below of Ali MacGraw wearing her two-tone ladies Rolex Datejust.

Ferdinand Piëch Porsche Pioneer & Billionaire

Porsche Pioneer & Billionaire

Ferdinand Piëch

Belongs To The Ages

1937-2019

Ferdinand Piëch passed away today. He was the grandson of Ferdinand Porsche who founded Porsche. Piëch was an engineer and was responsible for creating the Porsche 917 that won Le Mans.

The image above of Ferdinand Piëch wearing his GMT-Master was discovered by my pal Cam @ Craft & Tailored.

Ferdinand Piëch was also involved in the design of many iconic German cars including the Porsche 911, as well as the Audi Quattro and Volkswagen Phaeton. In the photo below we see Ferdinand Piëch pictured in 1969 on the left with his cousin, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche (middle) and his brother, Hans-Michel Piëch on the right. The three of them are largely responsible for the design of the Porsche 911.

Ferdinand Piëch in pictured below with his Porsche 917 race car on March 12, 1969 at the Geneva Motor Show Press Day event talking to Gerhard Mitter who was a Porsche racing driver.

Ferdinand Piëch was a billionaire who developed the Volkswagen Group which acquired other iconic brands like Lamborghini, Bugatti and Bentley. Ferdinand began his automotive career at Porsche but was forced to leave after a restriction said that no member of the Porsche or Piêch families could work in day-to-day operations at Porsche.

Ferdinand Piëch moved on to Audi where he eventually became the CEO. During his tenure at Audi Ferdinand grew Audi into much larger company that would compete successfully with Mercedes and BMW.

Jerry Seinfeld wearing a 1968 Rolex Daytona Reference 6239

UPDATE: After publishing this story Nick Gould brought to my attention that Ben Clymer from Hodinkee helped Jerry Seinfeld purchase the Rolex Daytona in this story. I have to say I was kind of shocked that this great story somehow slipped by me. I highly recommend listening to Spike's Car Radio Podcast episode that features Ben Clymer sharing the fascinating backstory behind Jerry Seinfeld's Rolex Daytona.

Jerry Seinfeld

1968 Rolex Daytona Reference 6239

If you can't believe what you are seeing, you are not alone! Jerry Seinfeld is one of the most beloved comedians in the world. I was watching Jerry on Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee and I thought I was hallucinating when I discovered him wearing a vintage Rolex Daytona!!!

I have an interesting backstory to share with you. As the head of the Rolex Fan Club I have spent my life staring at peoples wrists to see what watch they are wearing. Jerry has famously worn Breitling watches since his Seinfeld show. For some bizarre reason, over many years I keep expecting him to show up wearing a Rolex, but he never did—until yesterday, which blew my mind!!!!!!

If we look closely we see Jerry is wearing a vintage 1968 Rolex Daytona Reference 6239 with a stainless steel bezel.

It turns out this is no ordinary vintage Daytona, as it once belonged to Racing legend Vic Elford who won his 1968 Rolex Daytona as a prize for winning the 24 Hours of Daytona.

In the historic Rolex photo below from Porsche Motorsports, we see the 1968 Rolex Daytona winner, Vic Elford representing Great Britain, being presented with a stainless steel Rolex Daytona Cosmograph for his victory of the 24 At Dayona.

The vintage Rolex Daytona ad below is from 1965 and it introduces the Rolex Daytona Chronograph as the official watch of Daytona.

Mr. Wonderful is Back

Kevin O'Leary

I interviewed Kevin O'Leary (Mr. Wonderful) a few months ago and he was AMAZING!!!! The thing I love about Kevin is he tells it like it is, whether it's on Shark Tank or personally, and at the same time he is very wise. When we spoke he shared the most fascinating insight with me! We agreed that in the future I would interview him in person on video, but until then, here is a superb interview with Teddy Baldassarre.

Rolex Super Coolness: Chuck Yeager An Amazing Career...

The Complete History Of The Rolex GMT-Master

Rolex X-Files

...Rolex Supersonic Coolness...

General Chuck Yeager
Record Setting U.S. Air Force Test-Pilot

The Right Stuff

First Pilot To Break The Speed Of Sound
8 Decades Wearing Nothing But Rolex

I have some amazing news to share with you! My pal, Nick Gould, the super-talented horological journalist and researcher just made an astonishing discover as seen in the photo below. This photo shows Chuck Yeager in 1962 wearing a previously undocumented Rolex GMT-Master Reference 6542!!!

The supreme irony is that I had previously shown the photo below of Chuck Yeager wearing this watch in 1962, but I had mistaken it as a Submariner.

Notice the number on the tail of Chuck Yeager's is 6062, which is the same Reference Number as my favorite Rolex Moonphase [Reference 6062].

The photo above is cropped from the photo below which is mind-boggling if you click on it and check out the detail. It was taken in 1947 and is a photo of Chuck Yeager haulin' in his X-1.

In October 1947, at Edwards Air Force Test Center, Captain Charles "Chuck" Yeager forever changed history, when he was the first pilot to fly faster than the Speed of Sound.

And, yes, you guessed it! Chuck Yeager was wearing his Rolex Oyster Perpetual wrist-watch, that he purchased himself. So what does this mean? What kind of man would wear a Rolex Oyster Perpetual in such an environment?

A few days prior to his record flight, Yeager was seriously injured in a horseback-riding accident and suffered two broken ribs. The injury would jeopardize his flight status resulting in the removal from the mission. Scared, he went to a veterinarian for treatment and only told his wife about the accident. He also told his friend and fellow project pilot, Jack Ridley about the accident.

Yeager, on the day of the record flight, had trouble manipulating the closure of the X-1's hatch, and could not seal it properly. His pal, Jack Ridley, improvised a clever leverage device made from a broom handle, to assist Yeager with sealing the hatch, thus, allowing him to break the "speed of sound" record.

Chuck Yeager was so impressed with his Rolex, he sent an autographed picture (seen below) of his record flight to Rolex in Geneva. For the record, this is the first time this signed photo, from General Chuck Yeager, to Rolex, has ever been published. (And remember, you are seeing it for the first time here on Jakes Rolex World!!!)

Rolex Coolness: Chuck Yeager
Now & Then

Recently I have been going through the archive and I noticed how similar these two images of Chuck Yeager are. In the photo below taken in the early 1990s Chuck is wearing another Pepsi GMT-Master, but this time it's a Reference 1675.

Chuck is wearing a Coke GMT in the photo above and in the photo below taken more than a 60 years ago in 1958, he is wearing his big crown, no-crown-guard Submariner [Reference 6538] with the lollipop second hand and the orange triangle "carrot-top" bezel insert.

I have been wearing Rolex for more than thirty five years, but Chuck is going on at least his 71st year of wearing Rolex!!! DeBeer's slogan is "A Diamond Is Forever." Maybe Rolex should adopt a similar slogan!!! A Rolex Is Forever!?!?

Cat Stevens Concert The Return Of A King

Cat Stevens Concert

The Return Of A King

Cat Stevens was one of the most amazingly talented singer, songwriter guitarists of his time, and when I was a kid growing up in the 1970s his songs were on the radio all the time. Born in Great Britain, Cat Stevens specialized in folk music as well as rock and pop. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014.

"We must not cease from exploration. And the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we began and to know the place for the first time." —T.S. Elliot

We are in for a real treat today on Jake's Rolex World with the AMAZING full-length Cat Stevens concert below. Enjoy!:

Cat Stevens is famous for hits like "The First Cut is the Deepest", "Father and Son", "Wild World", "Moon Shadow", "Morning Has Broken" and "Peace Train."

Cat Stevens was born in a household with strict Christian parents, and in a move that shocked the world, in 1977 he converted to Islam and in 1978 changed his name to Yusuf Islam. The next year, in 1979, Cat put up all his guitars for auction and donated all the proceeds to charity and walked away from his ultra-successful music career.

Being a huge music fan, I always though it was totally bizarre and sad that he retired so early from music. Once again, in 2006 he shocked the world as he returned (28 years after he retired) to his music career! The video above was shot in 2015, and as we see he sounds better than ever!!!

Cat Stevens' voice and overall musical vibe is like Billy Holiday in the sense he has a unique sound signature that sounds like nobody else. Frank Sinatra once said "There is something to be said for things that endure", and just like Rolex, Cat Steven's is beyond timeless!!!

On a side note, I always thought Cat Stevens was American, as he sings with what appears to be an American accent—but when he speaks he has a British Accent!?!! I have noticed that basically all people with a British accent sound like they are singing in American English!?!! Think about it for a second. Listen to ANY Beatles or Rolling Stones song, and they sound American. I don't know why this is, but it's fascinating to me :-) I have a close friend who grew up outside the U.S. and she once made an interesting observation about the British accent and said: "People with a British Accent sound like they are chewing gum with their nose plugged up!?!!" :-0

Rolex Coolness: Peter Fonda

The Easy Rider Rolex
Easy Rider Movie [1969]
"Born To Be Wild"

Peter Fonda passed away today at age 79 and left behind quite a legacy.  Peter Fonda co-starred with Dennis Hopper in Easy Rider, and Peter Fonda wore a yellow gold Rolex GMT Master in the movie. Easy Rider is considered to be one of the seminal films that defined a generation.

Below is a screen grab of Peter Fonda's Rolex GMT-Master that appeared in the 1969 movie, Easy Rider.

"I'm Hip About Time.
I Just Gotta Go."
– Peter Fonda

In the photo above and below you see Peter Fonda in Easy Rider rolling his own and you see clear shots of his yellow gold Rolex GMT Master.

"Dude means nice guy. Dude means regular sort of person." –Peter Fonda

Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda are pictured below on the set of Easy Rider and in this shot you again see Peter Fonda's GMT Master on his wrist.

You can actually see the yellow gold Rolex GMT-Master pictured above on Peter Fonda's wrist in the famous 1969 Easy Rider opening scene it appears briefly on-screen 47 seconds in to the video below.

The Woodstock generation changed America forever, and ironically when Peter Fonda was sporting his yellow gold Rolex GMT Master in Easy Rider, Stephen Stills was on stage at Woodstock, making his debut with Crosby, Stills and Nash while wearing a Rolex Submariner.

The Hippy movement, which stemmed from the 1968 San Francisco Summer Of Love was blossoming across America, and the world. For better or worse, things would never be the same again...

Here is the scene that Peter talks about where he throws away his watch that is not the Rolex

The photo below is of Peter Fonda's actual yellow gold Rolex GMT Master he wore in Easy Rider.

Nick Gould discovered the photo below taken in 1992 that shows Peter Fonda wearing his yellow gold Rolex GMT-Master, and we see his famous sister, Jane Fonda standing next to him.

Sister Jane Fonda
As Barbarella

It is ironic, at the time Peter Fonda was filming Easy Rider, his sister Jane Fonda was filming Barbaralla which was also considered to be a slightly rebellious, counter-culture movie. Jane and Peter's father was the extremely famous movie star, Henry Fonda.
