Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid (1969)

Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid was the first movie that made Robert Redford a huge star. In Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid, Robert Redford costarred with Paul Newman who would end up becoming one of his closest pals.

Hollywood's Coolest & Most Handsome Stars of The 1970's
All Rolex Sport Watch Men

Ironically, Steve McQueen was originally chosen to star with Paul Newman in Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid, but their lawyers could not come to terms on who should have top billing, and Steve McQueen was replaced with Robert Redford!!!

Of Course, as we see below, Steve McQueen also wore a Submariner on his right wrist like Robert Redford, but Steve McQueen wore a Rolex Submariner Reference 5512 with no date, and Robert Redford wore a Rolex Submariner Reference 1680 with the date.

Paul Newman wore his trademark Paul Newman Daytona as seen below.

Robert Redford wore his trademark Rolex Submariner as seen below. It is interesting to note that in the two photos above and in the photo below, all three actors are wearing their sport Rolex watches with a blue denim shirt.

A Friendship For The Ages

Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid was a seminal western genre film that came at a time in American history where the wester movie era was coming to an end. Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid was a huge box office hit and grossed over $100Million in U.S. Dollars, which is the equivalent of $500Million in current U.S. Dollars.

Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid was the highest grossing film of the year in 1969, and at the 42nd Academy Awards in 1970 it won 4 Oscars, including best screen play. At the 24th British Academy Film Awards it won 9 awards including Best Film.

Robert Redford and Paul Newman's rapport was unmistakable and their friendship would endure. In the next two photos we see Robert Redford and Paul Newman playing ping-pong during the filming of Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid.

Robert Redford is pictured below–wearing his Rolex Submariner–probably during the the time of shooting Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid.

The Sting (1973)

Paul Newman made another blockbuster film in 1973 together named The Sting. I remember seeing this film when I was a kid and again when I was in college and I remember it being a great film.

I also vividly remember The Sting having an amazing soundtrack that primarily consisted of Scott Joplin ragtime jazz. In particular, Scott Joplin's "The Entertainer" song stands out most in my mind.

The Sting was another blockbuster hit and took in more than $160 Million. The Sting also won the prestigious Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Director as well as 5 additional Academy Awards.

An Enduring Friendship
Paul Newman and Robert Redford

Robert Redford and Paul Newman would remain friends until Paul Newman died. They always wanted to do another movie together but never found a script they liked.

In the photo below we see Paul Newman with Robert Redford and Paul Newman is wearing his trademark stainless steel Rolex Daytona.

Robert Redford was deeply saddened by Paul Newman's death and said "There is a point where feelings go beyond words. I have lost a real friend. My life–and this country–is better for his being in it." Paul Newman was 11 years older than Robert Redford.

Robert Redford: Timeless Coolness
Iconic and Timeless Cool Style

Robert Redford is one of the coolest dudes that ever lived and his sense of rugged style is as timeless as the Rolex Submariner. His career achievements as an actor, director and founder of the Sundance Film Festival are equally impressive. In this section we are going to take a closer look at Robert Redford's outstanding career as well as his iconic style.

Let's go back to in time to 1962. JFK was the president of the United States, and Robert Redford as a young actor, co-starred in a profound episode of the Twilight Zone:

In this next set we move into the 1970s, and Robert Redford has become a huge movie star, and stylish trendsetter.

Robert Redford's sense of style was unusual in the sense he could be completely clean-cut as well as ruff-hewn, and look great both ways. We see Robert Redford below riding his motorcycle.
