The Complete History Of The Rolex Milgauss

...2016 Story Preview...

In the past, I have written some very detailed stories on the history of different Rolex watch models, including The Complete History of the Rolex Submariner & SEA-DWELLER, The Complete History of the Rolex Daytona Cosmograph, and The Complete History Of The Rolex Yachtmaster–just to name a few.

I have been working on a story over the years, which I plan to publish in its entirety, pretty soon and it is named The Complete History Of The Rolex Milgauss, so I though I would share a special collage preview with you. In other words, no words, just photos, which tell a fascinating story!!!

I won't keep you completely in the dark, so I will share the opening story paragraph with you:

"In the early 1950s, a brilliant scientific organization was founded in Switzerland named the European Organization for Nuclear Research, which in French is named Organisation Européenne Pour la Recherche Nucléaire. It's nickname was CERN, which was founded in 1954, with the goal to build, maintain and operate the world's largest particle physics laboratory. This fascinatingly ambitious project began, like any great journey, with a few simple steps–in the beautiful and picturesque Swiss countryside."

This is a story about men and their machines...

Switzerland is renewed for many fine things beyond Rolex watches, and chocolate, so you might be surprised to find it is home to one of the greatest scientific communities in the world. Rolex originally made the Milgauss for scientists who worked at CERN...

Harrison Ford Returns As Han Solo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens

...Rolex Ultra-Super-Coolness...

Harrison Ford
Returns to STAR WARS as Han Solo
The Force Awakens

Who is the coolest guy to ever wear a Rolex? Steve McQueen? Paul Newman? Sir Sean Connery? One could argue it would be Harrison Ford! In the photo below we see Harrison Ford reprise his role as Han Solo in the upcoming J.J. Abrams Star Wars movie, which launches in theaters TODAY!!!

"Chewy, we're home!"

My two favorite movies of all time both star Harrison Ford, and they are Raiders Of The Lost Ark, and the original Star Wars. I first saw Star Wars in 1976 in a movie theater, and it completely blew my mind!!! I just saw the new Star Wars movie named, "The Force Awakens" in iMax 3D, and once again, it completely blew my mind. It has to be one of the best movies I have ever seen. I won't spoil it by giving away any details, but I will say that J.J. Abrams did an AMAZING job of writing and directing the movie. In many ways seeing the new Star Wars movie was a heartwarming homecoming of sorts.

Official Trailer

Below is the official Star Wars: The Force Awakens Trailer!!!!!

Star Wars
The Force Awakens
Trailer Teasers

Bellow you can see the first two official teaser trailers for the Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

In these trailers, we see Harrison Ford return as Han Solo which is really cool. In the photo below, we see Harrison Ford wearing his Rolex Datejust, as he kissed Cary Fisher, with Mark Hamill looking on. If I recall correctly, I think I remember Cary Fisher saying she and Harrison Ford had an affair offscreen, which may explain that look on her face below :-o

The screen grab below is from the official Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer. I could not help but notice how similar it looks to the picture above, of Harrison Ford hugging Carrie Fisher. Completely unrelated, but fascinating nonetheless.

Below are some never before seen photos of young Harrison Ford wearing his Rolex Datejust from my unpublished Rolex archive. Harrison Ford is as timeless and classic as his Rolex Datejust.

I recently mentioned Rolex's Instagram Page and how it had a bunch of famous people posting selfies of themselves sporting their Rolex watches. The photo below of singer Michael Buble appears on that page.

I thought since we are coming up on Christmas, it would be nice to check out the following Michael Bublé Christmas Special.

Rolex Instagram Is Awesome

If you haven't had a chance to check out the Rolex Instagram page, I highly recommend it. Rolex initially shunned the internet, but that has really changed recently. It appears Rolex is quickly moving to the leading edge of the web and it is really evident with their Instagram page.

When I first began Jake's Rolex World in 2008 I focused on showcasing photos of people, mostly celebrates wearing Rolex watches. I did this because prior to beginning Jake's Rolex World there were ZERO sources of photos of people wearing Rolex watches.

In other words, all the books, magazines and newspaper articles that focused on Rolex, published photos of just the watches, but I thought it was infinitely more interesting to see photos of people wearing their Rolex watches. In particular, I thought the "Human" story behind each Rolex was much more fascinating than the beautiful Rolex watches themselves.

Fast forward to today, and on the Rolex Instagram page, we see many famous Rolex wearers taking selfies and wrist shots of their Rolex watches!!! It really is amazing how far the web has come in the past eight years!!!

Speaking of Selfies, Rolex published this selfie that golf legend Jack Nicklaus took of himself, sporting his trademark yellow gold Rolex Day-Date. How cool is this!!!!!!

People ask me all the time which Rolex I think is the most beautiful? I would say the 1950 Rolex Oyster Moonphase triple-date pictured below is definitely one of the most beautiful complicated Rolex watches ever made! This model is ULTRA-RARE for many reasons. First and foremost because it has a black dial with star and pyramid indices. This beauty is also in flawless New Old Stock (NOS) condition. What a magnificent work absolute work of art!!!

Happy Thanksgiving from Jake!!!

Happy Thanksgiving from Jake!!!

Hi Everybody!!!

It is hard to believe it is already Thanksgiving again on Jake's Rolex Watch World!!! It has been another absolutely amazing year of filled with growth and amazing new Rolex historical content.

So many people have chosen to keep the time of their lives with Rolex, and the more time goes by, the more I realize how Rolex is really a universe in-and-of-itself. It's a world where the sun never sets, yet it's always daytime.

"The First Thanksgiving" painting by Jean Gerome Ferris (1863-1930)

Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday because it gives us a chance to pause and reflect on how fortunate we all are to be able to experience this amazing miracle, known as life, on this spinning marble we all share–named Earth.

Of course I realize Thanksgiving is a U.S. holiday, but I believe it's as timeless and universal as a sunset or a smile :-)))

Once again, Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Warmest regards,

Vintage 1980s Rolex Exotic Dial Brochure

Vintage 1980s Rolex
Exotic Dial Brochure

This 1980s Rolex brochure shows off some fascinating models with equally interesting dials that reminds me of Autumn and Fall.

We see five yellow gold Rolex watches with the following characteristics:
  • Day-Date with an Onyx dial
  • Lady Datejust with a a blue lapis dial
  • Oysterquartz Day-Date with an African mahonany dial
  • Lady Datjust with an African mahogany dial
  • Datejust with a birch dial.
I'm surprised not to see a bark finished Day-Date bracelet with a wood dial ;-)))

Steve McQueen Racing At Le Mans Rolex Submariner

...The King Of Cool...

Steve McQueen

 The Man & Le Mans

Rolex Submariner
Reference 5512

An all new documentary named Steve McQueen and Le Mans just released its first trailer, which can be seen below. This fascinating documentary covers his experience with filming his 1971 movie titled Le Mans.

Is the story of obsession, betrayal and ultimate vindication. It is the story of how one of the most volatile, charismatic stars of his generation, who seemingly lost so much he held dear in the pursuit of his dream, nevertheless followed it to the end.

STEVE MCQUEEN: THE MAN and LE MANS debuted earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival in France. A limited theatrical release will debut in Los Angeles and New York tomorrow on November 13th, 2015. A DVD of the documentary will be released on December 1st, 2015.

The poster below is the original 1971 movie poster for Le Mans, starring Steve McQueen. So basically the documentary above is about the making of the 1971 movie.

You can watch the entire Le Mans film below, and be sure to check out the scene at 3:09 seconds into the film where you can see Steve McQueen driving his 911 in the city of Le Mans, France, and you can also see him wearing his Submariner.

Below are previously unpublished images of Steve McQueen at Le Mans in 1971. In this first photo we get a clear shot of Steve McQueen wearing his Rolex Submariner.

In the photo below we see Steve McQueen leaning against a Ferrari 512S, while taking photos with his Nikon F SLR camera with a big lens, and of course, he is wearing his Rolex Submariner.

In the photo above and below we see Steve McQueen's 1969 Porsche 917K (Chassis Number 024) swathed in Powder Blue and Marigold Orange. This rare Porsche 917 featured an air-cooled 12 cylinder 560HP mid-engine. It disappeared after the movie was made, only to come back to life in a barn-find. This amazing car will likely be auctioned, and it could easily go for over $20,000,000.

In the photo below we see Steve McQueen in front of his 911S, while filming Le Mans, and notice his Submariner, along his Persol sunglasses, with this tie-dyed shirt. Groovy Baby, Yeah!!!!

The photo below looks like a Rolex magazine ad, but I made it myself since I thought it looks really cool. Methinks if Rolex made ads like this, they would be much more inspirational than boring photos of just watches.

Perfectly Timeless Classics

Ironically, everything considered classic today was once considered to be modern. Few things have stood the test of time like Steve McQueen, a Porsche 911, and a stainless steel Rolex Submariner. The Porsche 911 ad below shows the same model Steve McQueen drove in the opening scene for Le Mans.

The Rolex ad below features the same Rolex Submariner 5512 model Steve McQueen wore in Le Mans. This vintage Rolex ad is soooo cool, and so unlike any Rolex magazine ad you would see today...

PK Subban
Montreal Canadiens Defenseman
The $72 Million Man
(with A Heart To Match)

Two Tone Rolex GMT-Master

PK Subban is an amazing professional NHL hockey player who plays for the Montreal Canadiens. He also won a gold medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi while playing for Canada.

Nadeem is a Canadian reader of Jake's Rolex World and he wrote in and said:

Dear Jake,

First, I love your blog and check it regularly to get great bits of Rolex history and learn about who wears these timepieces that you are so passionate about!

Second, as a Canadian viewer, I have noticed PK Subban (defenseman for the Montreal Canadiens) is an avid Rolex wearer, philanthropist and internet celebrity. As a great role model and one of the few black players in the NHL, I would like to suggest you watch this and see if he is worth a post on the blog :)

I look forward to keeping up with your blog!

All the best,

PK Subban recently signed a deal with his team that will pay him $72 Million, which is very impressive. PK recently announced he would be giving a $10 Million grant to help underprivileged people in hospitals, which is the largest grant ever made from a Canadian athlete. PK is pictured below in a Canadian hospital talking with a child and her mother inspiring her to recover.

Happy Halloween!!!!!

Happy Halloween!!!!!

Rolex Around The World

Halloween has really become an international event as it is celebrated around the world—particularly in the Northern Hemisphere. Morton Olesen from Denmark sent in this great Halloween Lume shot showing his Rolex GMT-Master on a Rolex box, with a pumpkin jack-o-lantern in the background.

John Goldberger from Italy sent in the great Halloween photo seen below to share with you. It features a very rare and unusual one of-a-kind pink gold Rolex Datejust with a beautiful blue lapis dial from 1974 [Reference 1601].

John Goldberger is one of the top Rolex collectors in the world and author of 100 Superlative Rolex Watches which, if you don't have copy, is an excellent Rolex book. You can check out my extremely detailed review of his book by clicking here

Thanks for sharing John & Morton!!!!! Happy Halloween!!!!
