Rolex Coolness: John Goldberger
2011 Rolex GMT Master Calender

John Goldberger is a great pal of mine and he lives in Italy and is one of the top Rolex collectors in the world. He is the author of "100 Superlative Rolex Watches" and recently published an amazing book on Stainless Patek watches, which I will be doing a detailed review on as soon as I get a chance.

Every year, John creates a Rolex watch calendar just to give his friends, so you can't buy one, and here is the amazing cover artwork for his 2011 Rolex GMT Themed Calendar!!! How passionate about Rolex do you have to be to make an amazing Rolex calendar every year, filled with beautiful photos of rare Rolex watches as a Christmas present for all your fellow Rolex collector friends?

How many of the fascinating characters do you recognize on the cover?

Why I Research & Publish Rolex History Happy Holidays from Jake!!!!!!

Why I Research & Publish Rolex History
Happy Holidays from Jake!!!!!!

Hi Everybody!!!

I hope you are having a great holiday season!!!!

People often ask me what motivates me to capture all this amazing Rolex history?

First and foremost, I find it to be absolutely fascinating!!!! I am probably the biggest fan of reading Jake's Rolex World. I realize this sounds strange, but often times I love to get lost in these amazing historical worlds!!!

Secondly, I realize if I don't capture this amazing Rolex history, it will be lost forever, and that would be an absolute shame.

Last, but not least, I love all the friends I have made all over the planet, and if I knew there was only one other person on planet earth that enjoyed my research, writing and photo layouts as much as I do, it would all make it worth while. That being said, Greg Carrara is a huge fan of Jake's Rolex World and he just sent in this amazing holiday note:

Hi Jake,

I have to say, Jake's Rolex World is the best thing on the web. At night when I am hanging out late, I stay up much later than my wife, I love going through Jake's Rolex World…no matter how many times I go through your site, I always find something new or something I missed…it is like Seinfeld for me, I can never get enough…

Greg Carrara

I have to say that getting notes like this make for a very Merry Christmas!!!!

By the way, I have much more mind-boggling Rolex history coming up in 2011, and I mean mind-boggling!!!!!!

Happy Holidays!!!!!!!!

Jake :-D

Cary Grant & Yogi Berra in 1960 Supreme Timeless Style

Cary Grant & Yogi Berra in 1960
Supreme Timeless Style

Cary Grant is one of the coolest dudes that ever lived. One could even argue, he is the coolest guy that ever lived. In this fascinating candid photo taken in 1960 by Hollywood photographer, Leo Fuchs we see Cary Grant talkin' shop with baseball legend, Yogi Berra.

Over the years, I have been working on my series named "The Complete History Of James Bond Watches" and Part 2 of the series is named "Cary Grant Was The Real James Bond." As I point out in the story, Cary Grant was not only the archetype for the James Bond character, but he was also the first actor to be offered the role of playing James Bond.

Cary Grant agreed to play James Bond, but only in one movie, and EON productions insisted he sign at least a 3 movie contract, which he refused. What a shame!?!? Cary Grant was the living epitome and embodiment of timeless elegance...

U.S. Navy Doctor Bought Submariner for $70 and sells if for $66,100

Superman Submariner
U.S. Navy Doctor Bought Submariner for $70 and sells if for $66,100
[Reference 5510]

All my Rolex collector friends have been talking about this story where a U.S. Naval Medical Student who was a SCUBA diver bought a Rolex Submariner [Reference 5510] in 1958 for $70, and recently put it on eBay for an opening bid of $9.95, thinking it was worth nothing, and he was shocked when it sold for $66,100. HODINKEE wrote a great story that covers all the fascinating details.

Rolex History Video

The History Of Rolex Video

Fascinating all-new Rolex History video, made by Rolex!!!

Rolex Coolness: Captain Don Walsh 1 of 2 ROLEX DEEP SEA GMT's Coming to Antiquorum Auction December 8, 2010

Rolex Coolness: Captain Don Walsh
1 of 2 ROLEX DEEP SEA GMT's
Coming to Antiquorum Auction
December 8, 2010

U.S. Navy Captain Walsh set the all-time depth record 50 years ago in the Marinas Trench in the Challenger Deep off the coast of Guam, with his co-pilot Jacques Piccard. Both men received their DEEP-SEA Rolex GMT's as a gift from Rolex director, Rene-Paul Jeanneret.

Captain Walsh decided to put up his ultra-rare historical Rolex GMT so an extremely fortunate collector could enjoy it, since Captain Walsh has already enjoyed owning and wearing it for a half-century. Captain Walsh is pictured below at the 50th anniversary Rolex celebration of the record setting dive and he is wearing his ultra-rare DEEP-SEA GMT Special

Jacques Piccard co-piloted the Bathyscaphe Trieste's record setting dive in 1960 and we see him in the photo below wearing the only other Rolex DEEP-SEA GMT Special, which he actually wore on the record setting dive.

The
Antiquorum Auction is in New York on December 8, 2010 and if you are in New York later today, you can drop by and get a preview of the watch in person and meet U.S. Navy Captain Walsh. If you ever wanted to own a serious piece or the Rolex DEEP-SEA history, this is your opportunity...

You can read all about this amazing historical DEEP-SEA GMT Special and the record setting dive in detail on Jake's Rolex World.

1947 Rolex Speed Of Sound Record Ad

Tasha lives in Dublin, Ireland and she and her friend Jessica wrote in to let me know they have been enjoying Jake's Rolex World and they mentioned they love this series of current Rolex ads that feature the beautiful Luciana Curtis. Of course this is a play on Chuck Yeager's breaking of the Sound Barrier in 1947 while wearing his trusted Rolex, and it is really cool.

Jake's Quote Of The Day: Sir Winston Churchill On Vision

Jake's Quote Of The Day
Sir Winston Churchill On Vision

"The farther backwards you can look, the further forward you are likely to see."
–Sir Winston Churchill

I recently ran across this superb quote from Winston Churchill so I thought I would include this photo of Sir Winston Churchill wearing his pink gold Rolex Datejust which was a gift to him from Rolex. This watch was the 100,000th Officially Certified Swiss Chronometer made by Rolex.
