I have an interesting story to share with you about Frank Sinatra's song, "My Way." One day, more than 20 years ago, I was in New York on business. I took a cab from the airport into Manhattan and I had this cab driver who who was a really nice gentleman. He was born and raised in New York and had a classic New York Accent. We had a nice conversation and I asked him what his favorite song was?

He responded by saying, "My Way, by Frank Sinatra." I asked him if he new the words to it and he said yes. Then I asked him if he would sing it for me and he said yes. So here I am in the back of this yellow taxi and in the most perfect voice, he starts singing My Way—flawlessly!!!

The thing I noticed about the way he sang it, was that he not only knew the words, but I could tell that he meant the words as he sang them. It was his anthem. He was a lot older than me, I would say he was in his mid to late sixties and he was wearing a sport coat and glasses and looked like a character out of a Leroy Nieman painting from the late 1960s.

If you ever listen carefully to the words to My Way, they give you a great perspective. In my mind's eye, I can still see and hear him singing My Way while driving me into Manhattan. What a song!!! What a Life!!!! What a World!!!

BTW, I am pretty certain at the time, I was wearing an all stainless Datejust on a Jubilee bracelet with a white dial with raised white gold Roman numerals or a yellow gold Day-Date with a white porcelain dial with raised yellow gold Roman numerals.

Logan Paul, a YouTuber who lives in Los Angeles, is virtually unknown to anyone above the age of 25. Yet, he ranks No. 3 on Forbes' 2017 List of Top Influencers in Entertainment. He's appeared in commercials for brands ranging from Hanes to HBO; he makes $150,000 per Facebook post and $80,000 for sponsored content on Instagram. A meteoric rise is no overstatement to describe him: Three years ago his YouTube channel had a mere 150,000 subscribers. Today: 13 million. With over 2 billion video views, his estimated net worth is 6 million dollars. Did I mention he was 22?

During a trip to a Dubai mall a week ago, he was greeted by no fewer than 11,000 fans. In Dubai he also bought his first Rolex. 

Logan Paul, who bought a $6.55 million estate in Encino, Calif., just last month went for the 41-mm Rolex Day-Date II (ref. 218206) with an ice blue dial and a 3156 movement.

Is this story a big deal? I believe so. It is because Logan Paul is young and is a top influencer in the world who speaks to the youth, at a time where many wonder if they should own smart watches. 

In his video he is incredibly excited for finally owning a Rolex. It almost seems like the epitome of success for him. The video was posted six days ago and has already been seen over 4 million times! Less than a week in and it received 250,000 likes. Though this is the first Rolex he owns, it's not the first time he bought one. He bought his roommate an iced-up Rolex Submariner 16610 back in August as a gift. That video received over 8 million views. Now that's influence!

Bob Dylan sang, "The times, they're a changin'" and my pal Jacek took this photo that shows a new Rolex Day-Date II next to its great uncle, which is a vintage Submariner. Of course the irony is the Day-Date is much larger and meatier than the Submariner.

Human beings have been growing a lot over the last century, so it makes sense watches would scale-up the same way. Fascinating juxtaposition.

There is a New President

Wesley from Holland took these fantastic photos of the all new 41mm Rolex Day-Date II also know as The Rolex President. Rolex introduced this all-new from the ground up Rolex as part of the celebration of its 100th Anniversary. These first two photos are great and have a nice Autumn vibe.

The Rolex-Date date historically, since its inception in the 1950s has always been 36mm. Some people think the 36mm has become a little too small and others think it is just perfect as is. Rolex is moving forward by making the all new Day-Date II 41mm, which is bigger than a Daytona or Submariner.

Living Large

This next set of wrist shots really gives you an idea of how the watch wears. Like many readers of Jake's Rolex Watch Blog, I have not seen this all-new Rolex in person so these photos Wesley took give us a very good idea of how the watch wears.

To my design mind the all-new 41mm Day-Date II takes a little getting used to. In some ways it looks like a caricature of the 36mm version, but upon close inspection and analysis I notice this is likely a good thing. The fluted bezel it significantly wider and taller on the Day-Date II, than it was on the Day-Date. 

By making the Bezel taller and wider it gives it more of an upside-down recess peanut butter cup look, but that design characteristic is trademark Rolex and I think they did a great job implementing it. In other words, this watch is distinctively Rolex.

Making the Case for the New President

I think another reason Rolex went so much larger is because the Rolex President has always been perceived as a leadership watch. A watch worn by men who tell other men what to do, and its new size gives it more largesse. It looks more abundant, more visible, thus more striking.

This particular watch has an interesting monotone dial in the sense the arabic numerals are black like the dial so from any kind of distance it almost looks like there are no indices.

All in all, I think I like the new Rolex Day-Date, but I have not tried one on yet. In this case (pun intended) bigger seems better. Will the new President by better than the last one? It appears that way, but only time will tell. It looks very promising though...

Early Rolex Milgauss Design Language similar to new Rolex Day-Date II

I kept looking at the new Day-Date II, thinking I had seen that wide bezel somewhere before and I just figured it out.  

The design language of the new Day-Date II is somewhat reminiscent of this early Milgauss.  I like the Duaphine hands better.  I think Rolex should bring them back.  They look so precise and sharp–like a sword.

We were just looking at the black dial Day-Date II that Rolex previewed at Basel 2008, so I thought it would be good to look at all the upcoming 40mm Day-Date models.

I know many people like the new glacier blue dial with raised roman numerals.

I think I noticed that the Yellow Gold version is the only one with lume on the hands?

Rolex Day Date II Preview

Rolex showed off the upcoming all new Platinum Day-Date II in 40MM, which means it is the size of a Daytona or Submariner. The Day-Date has historically always been 36MM, so this is quite a design departure for Rolex.

I remember when I purchased my Rolex Submariner 25 years ago, thinking it was bizarre how big it was–it almost seemed to big.  Today is seems kind of small, particularly when compared to all the other watch brands.

The Datejust and the Day-Date today seem kind of small which is why Rolex is making the Day-Date larger.  Some people prefer the size of the current Day-Date.  Also, Rolex seems to have eliminated the beautiful domed bezel option and replaced it with a steeper, taller straight bezel.

I have not seen one of these in person, but I am curious.
