Rolex @ 2020 Greenroom Design Academy Awards

Rolex @ 2020 Greenroom Design

Academy Awards

Exploring Polar Extremes in 5th Year of Design

It's time again for the Oscars, and once again Rolex is not only the primary sponsor, but also designed the Greenroom for the 2020 Academy Awards as seen in the magnificent Rolex photos below.

The Following (in green text) is from the Rolex Press Release:

DESIGN OF THE GREENROOM

The ethereal beauty of a polar landscape is captured by Rolex in its 2020 Greenroom design. Greenroom guests are invited to witness an icy scene, as if they are in the middle of the North Pole gazing at the stark, white landscape from a cozy, wood- panelled observatory decorated with warm-toned furnishings that contrast with the frosty white of the frigid outside setting. Special lighting will give a sense of sunlight and shadow playing on the area, as well as simulating sunrise and sunset and the passage of time.

Time is a fundamental concept of the design, with the display of the Rolex Explorer II central to the decor that evokes the vital function that the watch plays during extreme expeditions. Meridian lines emanating from the watch draw the eye from the timepiece to the outside world.

Further representing the atmosphere of an expedition, slanted mirrors help deepen the sense of distance, while also enticing guests to view the polar horizon line depicted through the Greenroom’s windows. Overall, the effect is one that allows an appreciation of both the beauty and vulnerability of extreme regions of the Earth.

ROLEX GREENROOM 2020

ROLEX INVITES OSCARS GREENROOM GUESTS TO EXPLORE THE POLAR EXTREMES IN FIFTH YEAR OF DESIGN

Los Angeles, 5 February 2020 – Inspired by the world of cinema, every year since 2016, Rolex has created its own unique and evocative design for the Greenroom at the Dolby Theatre, the illustrious room where presenters gather before going on stage to bestow Oscars on the winners, as well as special guests of the Academy Awards.

This year, Greenroom guests are again treated to a design theme that has deep resonance for Rolex − polar exploration. The history of Rolex and exploration is linked to some of the greatest expeditions of the past century, with Rolex Oyster Perpetual watches accompanying explorers and adventurers to the highest peaks, the most remote caverns, the poles, and the deepest oceans – the underwater world reflected in the 2019 Greenroom theme.

For decades, these pioneers have considered Rolex watches as veritable tools in their struggle to push back physical and mental boundaries and attested to their reliability in the planet’s most challenging environments. The iconic Explorer model was launched in 1953, following the first successful ascent of Mount Everest, while the Explorer II was introduced in 1971.

In the 21st century, Rolex’s support for exploration is changing from pure discovery to preserving the natural world. In 2019, the company launched its Perpetual Planet initiative to protect the environment in the face of climate change. The Greenroom’s design signals this focus.

“The design of this year’s Greenroom is a reminder of the beauty and fragility of the environment that Rolex is seeking to protect through our support of pioneering individuals and organizations finding solutions to safeguard the planet for future generations,” said Arnaud Boetsch, Rolex Director of Communication and Image.

Fabien Cousteau: 100 Million Sharks Killed Per Year

Fabien Cousteau

100 Million Sharks Killed Per Year

11,417 Sharks Killed Per Hour

If you are a regular reader of Jake's Rolex World you know I tend to maintain a pretty positive outlook. In other words I tend to celebrate great things and people. I am a big fan of everything having to do with the life aquatic including Jacques Couteau, and I follow Fabien Cousteau on Instagram

Fabien is one of Jacques-Yves Cousteau's grandsons and he is a highly accomplished Aquanaut, Filmmaker, Ocean Explorer and Environmental Advocate. In the photo above we see young Fabien Cousteau with his legendary Grandfather, Jacque-Yves Cousteau.

A few days ago Fabien posted the following post on Instagram and it took my breath away! Not in a good way, but in a terrible way :-(

So why am I sharing this extremely disturbing Instagram post with you? To make you think, and I believe people need to be aware of how quickly humans are decimating the oceans.

The letter in the Instagram post above was written by Fabien's eight-year-old daughter 'Dylan,' who is in 2nd grade, to President Trumpand it points out that humans are killing 100 million sharks per year, which works out to 11,417 sharks per hour. If you break this down even further it works out to 190 sharks killed every minute, or more than 3 per second—every second of every day. So if you just read to this part in the post, more sharks have been killed than have killed humans in a year.

So who is killing all these sharks? I don't know and it is hard to imagine. I am aware that Shark Fin soup is very popular in China. According to Wikipedia:

"Shark fins are believed in Chinese culture to have properties of boosting sexual potency, enhancing skin quality, increasing qi or energy, preventing heart disease, and lowering cholesterol. There are claims that shark fins prevent cancer; however, there is no scientific evidence, and one study found shark cartilage generally to be of no value in cancer treatment."

When fisherman hunt sharks, they cut off the sharks fin and throw the shark back in the water, and of course, the shark suffers a terrible death. I would post pictures of sharks that have had their fins cut off but it is way too disturbing and gross to look at. I don't know what the solution is to this, but I believe if enough people learn about these facts, we as a society can take action to stop this barbaric behavior.

I deeply encourage the Chinese government to seriously consider outlawing the hunting and killing of sharks, and seriously reconsider their relationship with nature. I think this is especially poignant at this character-defining moment in history with the development and spreading of the Coronavirus in China.

Cousteau Legacy

In the famous family portrait below we see Jacques-Yves with his two sons, Philippe and Jean-Michel Cousteau (far right). Jean-Michel is Fabien's father. I recently interviewed Jean-Michel and he was AMAZING!!!

Jean-Michel Cousteau is in the photo below that was inspired by the family portrait above, with his children Fabien and CΓ©line Cousteau.

Jean-Michel Cousteau is pictured below from a TV documentary SCUBA Diving with his daughter CΓ©line and son Fabien Cousteau.

In the photo below taken by Fabien's mother, Ann-Marie Cousteau, we see young Fabien on the right with his grandfather, Jacques-Yves and his sister CΓ©line Cousteau.

In this next photo we see Jean-Michel Cousteau with his daughter CΓ©line and son Fabien Cousteau.

In the video below we see Jean-Michel Cousteau with leading marine biologist, Dr. Sylvia Earle. Dr. Earle is also an avid explorer, author, and lecturer. She has been a National Geographic explorer-in-residence since 1998. If you are not familiar with Dr. Sylvia Earle, you should check out her recent documentary titled Mission Blue, which can be seen on Netflix. Also you can visit Sylvia Eearle's Mission-Blue.Org to learn more about her superb mission.

In the photo below we see Fabien Cousteau with Dr. Sylvia Earle who is a leading marine biologist as well as being a world renowned Rolex brand ambassador. I would say Sylvia Earle is almost like a female version of Jacques-Yves Cousteau.

"Taking care of our planet is not about sacrifice but investment in our future."

Antiques Roadshow: Unworn Rolex Daytona 6263

FOUND: UNWORN

ROLEX DAYTONA

'PAUL NEWMAN' 6263

"In this condition, I don't think
there's a better one in the world."

—Appraiser

 By DANNY CRIVELLO

He is a U.S. Air Force veteran who happened to buy a Rolex Oyster Cosmograph 6263 in the 1970s while he was stationed in Thailand. During his deployment he had noticed that airline pilots at Air America and Continental all had Rolexes on their wrists.

He ordered his watch and paid $345.97 after a 10% discount through the Base Exchange. He meticulously kept all receipts and brochures.

His plan was to scuba dive with the watch as he'd heard Rolexes were good for that. But after acquiring the piece, he thought the watch was way to nice to be taken in salty water. So he stored it, along with the warranty paper, receipts and box, and has never worn it.

The sticker is almost intact.

This find was part of a new episode of "Antiques Roadshow" that just aired today. In this PBS show, antiques appraisers travel the country in search of America's hidden treasures. And what a treasure it is for the Rolex community! This is the highest appraisal of the show's season. And it was found in North Dakota.

And when the Air Force veteran learned the value of his unworn 6263, he was floored!

Check out the full video below.
