Earlier this week we learned that Gian Riccardo Marini would be taking over as the new CEO of Rolex in Geneva. This is probably and excellent choice, in that if you study photos of him, you see he has a great sense of classic style. Of course, Gian Riccardo Marini is Italian, and everybody knows Italy is renowned for being perhaps the most stylish country in the world.
In this photo taken in 1979 we see billionaire, business tycoon, Gianni Agnelli in St. Moritz and he is sporting his Omega Ploprof Seamaster. Gianni Agnelli is renowned for not only being super-stylish, but for also wearing his watches around the outside of his shirt sleeve. A few weeks ago on Jake's Patek Philippe World, I published another story on Gianni Agnelli sporting his Patek Philippe World Time watch.
As legend has it, Omega developed the Omega PloProf with COMEX and Jacques Cousteau. Essentially, the Omega PloProf Seamaster Professional was developed to compete with the Rolex SEA-DWELLER. Omega formally launched the PloProf in 1970 after 4 years of research and development.
Omega discontinued the PloProf in 1979, and several years ago, the brought the model back to life and named it the Omega SeaMaster Ploprof 1200M–as seen in the two photos below. To learn more about the history of the Omega Ploprof there is a great site dedicated to it named Ploprof.com.
Here is a cool shot of the modern Omega Ploprof with a safety-orange rubber band on it. It has a very sporty, aquatic look to it. I still miss Flipper Fridays ;-(
My pal Ariel Adams is the publisher of A Blog To Read and earlier this year, at BaselWorld he had the opportunity to interview Stephen Urquhart, who is the CEO of Omega Watches. I really enjoyed the interview and I was extremely impressed with Stephen Urquhart depth of knowledge, and he certainly is a brilliant conversationalist.
This is a pretty iconic photo if you think about it. Lance Armstrong wearing his trademark ARMSTRONG Band on one wrist with his Pepsi GMT Master on the other wrist.
Marco is a reader of Jake's Rolex World and he is from the Netherlands. He sent in this photo of his Rolex Submariner witch a note saying he is just about to celebrate his 27th birthday, as well as his first year anniversary on his Rolex warranty card ;-) Marco also mentioned his LV Submariner is his only Rolex and he likes it with the black bezel insert...
Historically Rolex has always been extremely secretive and discreet, and no journalists in the past have ever been invited "INSIDE ROLEX" to explore and report on all four Rolex Manufacturing faclities in Switzerland.
In November 2013, this changed when Rolex invited Jake to take an unprecdented journey into the heart of Rolex to learn and report on everything he witnessed and learned.
This Super-Detailed 3 Part Story is a "MUST READ" story for anybody who wants to understand what really makes Rolex tick.
