A Single Red Submariner LOVE STORY...

A Single Red Submariner

LOVE STORY

Some of my favorite stories are from readers of Jake's Rolex World who write in to share their fascinating Rolex stories. Frank wrote in recently to share his story about his loyal and dependable lifetime companion of 45 years which is a magnificent Single Red Submariner.

Jake.

Great magazine. Just read your article on Dr. Miller and his RedSub. Like the good doctor, I wear my Rolex Red Submariner all the time. I bought it used for $700 in 1975 to celebrate my self funded MBA.

My career in technology research brought me to hundreds of places around the world and like Maurice, I found it to be a great conversation starter. Technology people consider it to be the ultimate symbol of mechanical engineering.

In 1990, my late wife bought me a very nice Cartier tank watch. I think it’s very pretty but it stays in the little red box. The RedSub is MY watch. My wife once told me she loved my RedSub and it was the only sport watch you could wear with a tuxedo.

When I acquired my RedSub, I didn't know what a RedSub was. I just wanted a Rolex Submariner. I had been a submariner in the U.S. Navy and saw many of them among the officers and crew of the boats I served on.

When I was in the Navy, I was a reactor operator on nuclear submarines. I was saving to go to college and couldn't afford the price of a Rolex. After scrimping through the Navy and college, I knew I wanted two "things" a Rolex Submariner watch and a Mercedes SL sports car. The Rolex came first (1975) and the Mercedes came in 1983 (1983 380SL). Since then, I have had six Mercedes, but only one Rolex. They last forever.

After starting in Nuclear Engineering, I got my bachelor's in Finance and Information Systems and an MBA. After that, I pursued a career in information technology in the financial services industry. I wore the RedSub every day, but it didn't get much attention until I rose to be a Senior Vice President at Anthem (insurance) and later MasterCard.

It seems more people at that level understood what it was. In 1995, I founded the global financial services research and advisory organization for Gartner Group Inc., the global leader in information technology research and advisory services. My Job included advising the CEOs and board members of financial institutions worldwide and that's when the Rolex really became a conversation piece.

As you know in many European cultures it's traditional to have coffee before talking business. Often, my client's eyes would grow to the size of silver dollars and they would ask, "Is that a real Rolex Red Submariner?"

All in all, my watch was a reliable and accurate timepiece, but most of all a conversation starter.

Keep up the good work with your great magazine.

Frank Schlier

Rolex Reopens in Switzerland!

WELCOME BACK!!!

Rolex Reopens in Switzerland

Rolex is one of the most beloved and trusted brands on earth, so when they decided to shut down all their production facilities in Switzerland it felt very akward. Our Captain Danny reported on our Twitter @RolexMagazine that for the first time since March, Rolex has reopened its facilities in Switzerland. For the first week back teams are working half days, with a 30-minute gap in between shifts to avoid contact. Also, face masks are required and provided by the company as they are not allowing outside masks.

In the United States, the Dallas Rolex service center has reopened as well this week. “Rolex Dallas is open as of [Monday] with a very limited capacity per our local state guidelines,” an email to customers read.

“Please understand there will be delays in processing received packages and completing estimates and/or repairs until we are able to operate a full capacity. We anticipate turnaround times to be up to six weeks.”

If you are interested in learning much more about the Rolex WonkaWorks in Switzerland be sure to checkout my story named, "Inside ROLEX: Exploring What Makes Rolex Tick."

I wrote my Inside Rolex story back in 2013 after I was invited by Rolex along with Ben Clymer, James Dowling and Ariel Adams (all pictured below) to become the first journalist to tour all four Rolex manufacturing facilities in Switzerland.

Below are some photos of the different Rolex vertically integrated facilities in Switzerland that make Rolex watches. To all Rolex employees in Switzerland, my team wishes you nothing but the best as your safely return!!!

Serious Quality Control

Rolex does super-heavy-duty extreme testing on 100% of all watches they make, to ensure they are perfect in every way. Rolex basically takes a belt-and-suspenders approach to testing, which adds layers of redundancy, since they are so fanatical about ensuring absolute perfection.

The machines below show a specially developed Rolex machine that is testing huge boxes of assembled Rolex watch cases with their movements installed. This complex machine tests each watch in multiple positions to simulate real-world-use case-scenarios. If you look closely, you will notice the three robotic machines below can each hold and test 1000 watches each.

False Steve McQueen Association from Antiquorum Auction House

False Steve McQueen Association from

 Antiquorum Auction House

An Open Letter from Jake

A dozen years ago, when I started Jake's Rolex World there were a number of falsely perpetuated Rolex rumors—many of which were based upon false association. I even wrote a story named "The Complete History of Rolex Mythbusting: Separating Rolex Fact from Fiction."

One of those rumors referred to "The Steve McQueen Explorer", so of course I went looking for evidence that Steve McQueen wore a Rolex Explorer. I came up empty handed because I discovered this false association was a myth perpetuated by people who wanted to try and capitalize on the Paul Newman Daytona. Today I discovered that Antiquorum published an error in their most recent catalog which continues this false 'Steve McQueen' association with the Rolex Explorer (Reference 1655) which as a public service I am bringing to their attention so they may retract & correct their irresponsible error. Basically, so long as any entity puts forth this FAKE NEWS / false association I will continue to correct them.

Why am I doing this? For two reasons. People or entities—especially auction houses—who put themselves forth as being 'experts' on Rolex watches should be aware of the REAL HISTORY of Rolex, and should NOT be publishing false narratives which deceive and confuse the public.

Secondly, as the world's leading Rolex historian, I am 1000% certain that Rolex history is so amazing on its own and requires ZERO exaggeration.

I will go so far to say that ANYBODY who puts forth this FAKE NEWS / false Steve McQueen association narrative is a complete IDIOT and does not know what they are talking about and, thus are NOT trustworthy.

Just to be crystal-clear, as witnessed in the photo below, Steve McQueen owned and wore a number of Rolex Submariner models and NEVER wore a Rolex Explorer. I confirmed this fact when I interviewed his ex-wifes as well as his son. I defy anybody on planet earth to prove otherwise!?!!

Don Shula was born Donald Francis Shula in 1930 and passed away today at the age of 90. Don Shula is best known as the head coach for the Miami Dolphins from 1970 to 1995, which he lead to two Super Bowl victories.

Don Shula is also the ONLY coach in NFL history to have a perfect season. He was also the Head Coach for for the Baltimore Colts from 1963 to 1969. During his career he led his teams to six Super Bowls...

In the photo below we see Don Shula with former Miami Dolphins Quarterback Bob Griese waving to a crowd and notice the are both wearing Rolex Day-Date models on President Bracelets...This photo was taken on December 16, 2007 which was the 35th anniversary of their 1972 undefeated season, and this image appears courtesy of J. The photo below from Super Bowl VII shows quarterback Bob Griese passing against the Washington Redskins at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Some consider Griese to be the greatest quarterback in history as he is the only one to have an undefeated season...

Rolex Leaves Baselworld

Rolex Leaves Baselworld

Rolex, along with Patek Philippe, Chanel, Chopard & Tudor announced they were leaving the BaselWorld Trade Show for a newly developed Trade show with the Foundation De La Haute Horlogerie as we see in the press release below which spells out all the details. The release says the show will be for “retailers, press, VIP customers.” So unlike Baselworld, the public—watch enthusiasts—won’t be able to attend the new show.

Rolex CEO, Jean-Frédéric Dufour, Chief Executive Officer of Rolex SA, and Board Member of Montres Tudor SA said:

"We have taken part in Baselworld since 1939. Unfortunately, given the way the event has evolved and the recent decisions make by MCH Group, an in spite of the great attachment we had to this watch show, we have decided to withdraw. Following discussions initiated by Rolex, it seemed only natural to create a new event with partners that share our vision and our endless, unwavering support for the Swiss watchmaking sector. This will allow us to present our new watches in line with our needs and expectations, to join forces and better defend the interests of the industry.

I have to say that my favorite response on this subject comes from @MisterRolex (James Dowling) who said:

"Those who do not choose to evolve are actually choosing to perish. RIP Baselworld, the dinosaurs will welcome you."
