Marlon Brando Rolex GMT Master From Apocalypse Now...

...Profiles In Coolness...

Marlon Brando
The Wild One

The Greatest Actor In History
An Amazing Life with Rolex Keeping His Time
1924-2004

Marlon Brando is considered by many to be the greatest actor that ever lived. In his amazing career he won two Academy Awards. One for Best Actor in the 1954 movie "On The Waterfront" and in 1972, another for Best Actor in "The Godfather."

Not only was Marlon Brando a pioneer of cool, but he was also a lifetime Rolex wristwatch wearer. In this article we will see him wearing five different Rolex watches.

Marlon Brando's First Rolex

Marlon Brando was born in 1924, and received his first Rolex in 1943, at age 19 from his parents, and it is seen below. It was a Rolex Oyster Royalite Observatory model.

The inscription on the back of the watch reads, "To Bud, from Mother & Dad. 1943" "Bud" was Marlon Brando's nickname his parents gave him when he was a child.

The Fugitive Kind (1960)
All The Crazy Moonphases

John Goldberger, the author of 100 Superlative Rolex Watches pointed out that in the 1960 movie, The Fugitive Kind, starring Marlon Brando and Joanne Woodward, that Marlon Brando mentions his Rolex Moonphase 6062. John also points out that he thinks the watch is a chronograph, but I can't see it well enough to tell. I definitely see the moonphase on the dial of the watch when Marlon hands it to Joanne.

John Goldberger pointed out to me in an email, "I think this is the first Rolex advertising in the movies, because I bet the original book or script by Tennessee Williams didn't mention the words Rolex Chronometer."

Update: In a follow-up email, John mentioned "Tennessee Williams wrote the script for The Fugitive Kind in 1937, at which time Rolex had NEVER made a Moonphase of any kind. This means that in 1960, the screenplay authors added the words Rolex Chronometer as well as the description for the Moonphase. Also the description is too precise for the knowledge of a film-maker, and the supreme irony is that the model was out of production in 1960!!"

Marlon Brando is pictured below in 1962 with his fellow Hollywood leading men including Rock Hudson, Cary Grant and Gregory Peck.

The Godfather (1972)
Don Vito Corleone

Marlon Brando starred in The Godfather in 1972, which is considered to be on of the best films of all time.

Last Tango In Paris (1972)

Marlon Brando starred in The Last Tango In Paris in which he wore a yellow gold Rolex Datejust as seen in the photos below.

In the next three photos, all taken in 1975 we see Marlon Brando sporting his Coke GMT Master on an Oyster bracelet.

The first photo below shows Marlon Brando with famous rock and roll promoter, Bill Graham.

In 1978 Marlon Brando played Superman's father Jor-El in Superman: The Movie.

Apocalypse Now (1979)
Rolex GMT Master

In this next set of photos we see Marlon Brando wearing his Rolex GMT Master in the movie Apocalypse Now. Rolls Royce & Rolex Vintage Rolex Ads

Rolls Royce & Rolex
Vintage Rolex Ads

Some would say that Rolex has always been the Rolls Royce Of Watches. I always perceive Rolex as being more the Mercedes-Benz of watches, but it is fascinating to take a look back at these vintage Rolex ads. The first Rolex ad below from 1938 places Rolex on the same page with Rolls Royce, and the second vintage Rolex ad covers the CEO of Rolex, Sir David Plastow who wears a two-tone Rolex Datejust. Fascinating!

Jimmy Buffet Keeping The Time Of His Life with Rolex

...Rolex Super Coolness...

Jimmy Buffet
The Man from Margaritaville

Keeping The Time Of His Life with Rolex

Since Jimmy Buffett was born on Christmas in 1946, I thought it would be great to check him out for this rockin' Rolex Christmas. Jimmy Buffett is best known for his song, Margaritaville  which was a mega-hit in 1977.

Jimmy Buffett's music is known as "Island Escapism", which is a form of country folk music, coupled with pop music, with tropical themes running through his lyrics. This form of music is also know as Gulf & Western. We see Jimmy Buffet pictured above and below in 1977 wearing his Rolex GMT Master. I could not help but notice the anchor Jimmy Buffet is wearing around his neck in the photo above and below look a lot like the the one that comes in the box with the Rolex Submariner.

Jimmy Buffett 1977

Jimmy Buffett was a Protégé of Jim Croce, who also wore a Rolex sports watch. When Jim Croce died, ABC Dunhill chose Jimmy Buffet to take Jim Croce's place. In the video below we see Jimmy Buffett performing Margaritaville, back in the 1970s, and he is wearing his yellow gold Rolex GMT.

In the recent photo below, we see Jimmy Buffett performing with stainless steel GMT Master on his wrist. Jimmy Buffett is more popular today than ever, and he is one of the hardest working live musicians. Jimmy Buffett is a cultural phenomenon in many ways, and has a following of fans which have a commonly used nickname of Parrotheads

There is even a special nickname for Jimmy Buffett's younger fans, as well for the children of Parrotheads, which are referred to as Parakeets, or Keets. Jimmy Buffett's immense popularity with his highly dedicated fans would be akin to Deadheads who would follow the Grateful Dead all over the place, thus the similarity between Parrotheads, and Deadheads.

Jimmy Buffett is an amazing man, and an accomplished airplane pilot, and sailor, and surfer. His life is filled with many amazing lifetime achievements. Today, Jimmy owns a line of restaurants named Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville. He also owns casinos under the same name and other business ventures. The video below was shot on Google campus, and features a great discussion from Jimmy Buffett, as well as a performance.

The photo below shows Jimmy Buffett at game five of the eastern conference semifinals on May 15, 2013, and Jimmy is rockin' a Rolex Sky Dweller.

Sylvie van der Vaart Huge Rolex Fan

...Rolex Hotness...

Sylvie van der Vaart
Huge Rolex Fan

There is nothing sexier in my mind, than a gorgeous woman wearing a man's Rolex. Sylvie van der Vart is  married to Rafael van der Vaart, who is a famous soccer player from the Netherlands. In 2003 she was voted Netherlands Sexiest Female. While she typically wears a yellow gold Rolex Day-Date on a matching Rolex Oyster bracelet, she is pictured in the first photo wearing a stainless steel Rolex on a matching Oyster bracelet.

Early 1960s Rolex PAN AM Ad [Reference 6582]

Rolex PAN AM Ad
[Reference 6582]

It is interesting because Rolex really tried to push the Rolex ZEPhYR Reference 6582 in the early 1960s, but it never did that well. Still this is a fascinating vintage Rolex ad. It almost looks like the Good Humor President is asking the Pan Am Captain for a hand bump...

An Amazing Career
With Rolex Keeping The Time Of His Life
1932-2003

Over the next few weeks on Jake's Rolex World we are going to check out some serious country music icons that wear Rolex, beginning with Johnny Cash.

Johnny Cash is widely regarded as one of the greatest recording stars of the second half of the 20th century. His music style spanned, Rock and Roll, Country, Rockabilly, Blues, Gospel and Folk. Johnny Cash was born in 1932 in Kingsland, Arkansas, and died in 2003.

He left behind an amazing recording catalog, and legacy. It is fascinating to note Johnny Cash was a Rolex man, and we see him pictured below performing on September 22, 1985 performing live at Farm Aid, and he is sporting his yellow gold Rolex (President) Day-Date.

Johnny Cash's actual 1950s vintage yellow-gold Rolex Oyster Perpetual is pictured below. It is fascinating to consider he wore different Rolex watches his entire career.
Johnny Cash appears in the 1955 video below, singing his country hit "I Walk The Line."

Johnny Cash was good pals with Elvis Presley, and the two of them used to perform at the same venues together. Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley are pictured together below in 1956. Of course, Elvis Presley also wore a Rolex.

Johnny Cash is pictured below in 1956 standing behind Elvis Presley (sitting). On the far left we see Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins playing guitar.

Johnny Cash is pictured below with Bob Dylan who is a big fan of Cash's.

Johnny Cash is pictured above between Glen Campbell and Willie Nelson at Farm Aid in 1985, and we see them perform together in the video below.
