Three More Modern Paul Newman Daytona Watches

Zenith White Dial Stainless Daytona

This photo was taken in November 2007 at the Champ World Series GP in Mexico City where and Paul Newman is congratulating his driver Sebastian Bourdais for winning the event for his Newman-Haas racing team and we see Paul Newman wearing a modern stainless steel Rolex Daytona with a Zenith movement and white dial on an Oyster bracelet.


Somebody wrote in saying they thought the Rolex Daytona that Paul Newman is wearing above might be a Reference 116520 which has the in-house Rolex movement. I am 100% certain it is NOT a Reference 116520 and that it is a Zenith movement Daytona just like the one I took the photo of pictured below.

The 3 and 6 subdials on the 116520 sit-up higher on the dial than they do on the Zenith. As you can see on the Zenith dial below and above, the subdials are perfectly centered on the 3 and 6 markers.

In the photo below we see Paul Newman wearing a fourth Rolex Daytona. This time a modern stainless steel Daytona with a Zenith movement and black dial.

Modern White Gold Daytona with Black Dial & Crocodile Strap

This next photos of Paul Newman shows him wearing a fifth Rolex Daytona. This time is is a modern white gold Rolex Daytona with a black dial on a crocodile strap.





The next two photos of Paul Newman were taken just before he passed away. Of course he was at the race track and he was wearing his white gold Rolex Daytona on a black crocodile strap. Paul Newman had pure passion for Rolex and Racing...


I must admit that whenever I look at the photo above and the photo below, they make me sad. I don't know if I am just reading between the lines, but my interpretation of the images is as follows: These are some of the last photo taken of Paul Newman in public before he passed away. As you can see he is unusually thin and frail looking.

In the photo above and below, Paul Newman is 83 years old and I believe that when these photos were taken, he realized he was close to death. I see him taking-in the race-track, perhaps for the last time and as we know, he not only loved racing, but also loved watching car racing.

It appears to me that he is taking-in the beauty of the race-track for the last time and he looks sad because he realizes how close he is to the end of his life. I realize I could be way of with my analysis, but I thought I would share it with you ;-)-:

Paul Newman Rolex Day-Date

Paul Newman also wore a Platinum Rolex Day-Date seen in the photo below.


As we have seen, Paul Newman is renowned for wearing at least five different Rolex Daytona models, as well as having worn a stainless steel Rolex Datejust in The Color Of Money.

It is interesting to note that I have never seen a photo of Paul Newman wearing a yellow gold Rolex. He only wore stainless steel, white gold and platinum.

This next Paul Newman Rolex Oyster is fascinating for many reasons. In an interview with Paul Newman, Rolex historian, John Brozek asked Paul Newman where and when he got his first Rolex Daytona? Paul Newman said that his first Daytona, as pictured below, was given to him as a gift by his wife, Joanne Woodard in 1972, which was the year he started his professional racing career.




The stainless steel Rolex Daytona [Reference 6263] with the black dial and black bezel insert that Paul Newman is wearing in the above photo as well as the photos below would look just like this one. Notice, that this watch has screw-down protectors on the two chronometer buttons, unlike the 6241 with the white dial that we already examined. For clarity sake, the photo below is NOT of Paul Newman's watch. I just want to give you a visual frame-of-reference.



This black dial Daytona also has a black acrylic bezel insert and it is worth pointing out the black dial on this Rolex Daytona 6263 is not an exotic dial. The only reason I bring this up is due to the fact that often times in photos, like the one above, the high acrylic crystal makes it look like there is an outer white dial, which is simply an optical illusion.



For many years Paul Newman also wore his black dial Rolex Daytona [Reference 6263] on a Fatstrap as seen in the two photos above and the one below.




As Paul Newman got older, he stopped wearing his Rolex Daytona on a Fatstrap and started wearing it on a Rolex Oyster bracelet and even wore it on a Jublilee bracelet.


The Rolex Oyster bracelet Paul Newman wore on his vintage Rolex Daytona was retrofitted with a brand new Rolex Oyster bracelet which was sturdier and perhaps more comfortable than the original. It would have also had a triple-lock clasp which the original would not have.



Paul Newman had as interesting and kind of strange habit with the way he always wore his Rolex Daytona watches. He would wear them with the two chronograph pusher buttons unscrewed as you can see in the photos above. This could have been due to the fact that his white dialed Daytona (featured before this one) lacked screw-down pusher locks and he liked it that way.


Supposedly a Rolex Daytona will still stay water resistant without the screw-down pusher locks screwed down. As I understand it, even a Rolex Submariner will remain waterproof without the crown being screwed down. This is due to the fact there are water-tight gaskets in place that stop water from entering the case. Don't try this at home, and neither will I =)

Paul Newman clearly suffered from RISitus as we can tell in the photo below that shows him wearing his Rolex Daytona Reference 6263 on a Jubilee bracelet. This is the same watch as in the photos above but he swapped out the Rolex Oyster bracelet for a Rolex Jubilee bracelet.



Accepting An Academy Award On The Set Of The Color Of Money

This first image below was taken on March 24, 1986 and shows Paul Newman accepting an Honorary Oscar via Satellite on the set of The Color Of Money. Notice Paul Newman is wearing one of his trademark Paul Newman Rolex Daytona watches on a FatStrap.  Ironically, Paul Newman would go on to win another Academy Award for Best Actor later that year, for his role in The Color Of Money!!!



This next image taken on the set of The Color Of Money, show Paul Newman with his co-star, Tom Cruise. Notice Paul Newman is sporting his same black dial Rolex Daytona on a FatStrap. What makes these two images interesting is that Paul Newman wore a stainless steel Rolex Datejust in the movie, but you see that when he was not acting he was wearing his trademark Paul Newman Daytona.

Iconic and Timeless Cool Style

There are very few men and women with a sense of style that transcends time, but a few come to mind like Cary Grant, Sophia Loren and Grace Kelly. Steve McQueen is unequivocally The King Of Cool in every way.



Steve McQueen not only had a great sense of clothing style, but he also had amazing taste in cars, motorcycles and beautiful women.



Somebody once said that the candle that burns twice as bright lasts half as long, and that appears to be the case with Steve McQueen. I thought that since we are celebrating his 85th Birthday, it would be fitting to also explore his amazing sense of timeless style.

It didn't matter wether Steve McQueen was riding a motorcycle or riding a horse in a western, he always had an amazing charisma, and sense of style, which was what made him "The King Of Cool."


In the photograph below, we see Steve McQueen sporting a pair of Jack Purcell tennis shoes with no socks, along with a pair of khaki jeans, a polo shirt and his trademark Persol sunglasses. Also notice he is wearing his watch on a Fatstrap.


The amazing thing in my mind, as a designer, is that Steve McQueen could literally walk out of any of these photos into any room and not look out of place. As a matter of fact he would look classic and great.

Many readers of Jake's Rolex World have been pointing out how Daniel Craig who currently plays James Bond has similar style to Steve McQueen and one reader, mentioned he thought Daniel Craig was the new Kind Of Cool Style and I would not disagree.

In this next photo we see a recent photo of Daniel Craig and he is wearing the same Persol sunglasses which were Steve McQueen's trademark sunglasses.



As many readers of Jake's Rolex World know, Daniel Craig is also a big Rolex fan.

As we saw in the photos above, not only is Steve McQueen timeless and iconic, but his Rolex Submariner also look equally masculine and timeless as his personal style.







This next photo below by William Claxton is of Steve McQueen with model Peggy Moffitt in front of his 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso.




Bullitt [1968]

This next publicity photo of Steve McQueen from the movie Bullitt is perhaps the most iconic photo of him.


The streets of San Francisco car chase in Bullitt is probably the most famous car chase from any movie in history. Steve McQueen's Ford Mustang muscle car is over-the-top cool!!!! Turn the volume way up!!!!

Steve McQueen was very serious about working out and staying in shape. As a matter of fact he worked out two-hours a day and at one point he ran five miles a day–7 days a week. He was also friends with Bruce Lee who taught him Karate.


On March 25, 2010 Greg Carrara, who is a daily reader of Jake's Rolex World wrote in and said:

"Steve McQueen was cool. That is it. He didn't need tattoos all over his body, he didn't need carefully crafted facial hair, he didn't need a fashion consultant, he didn't need to pose, he didn't need props, he didn't need a group of guys to tell him how great he was. No entourage, not tough guy talk, no bragging, no nothing. He was just cool, period."



In the next photo we see Steve McQueen's mug shot from when he got arrested for a DUI in 1972 in Anchorage, Alaska, which is not cool, but it is kinda funny that he is giving the peace sign in the photos. Two years later in 1974 he would become the highest paid actor in the world.
