Al Worden: Belongs To The Ages 1932-2020

NASA Apollo 15 Astronaut

Al Worden

1932-2020

Belongs To The Ages

This is a story I have been planning on writing for a while, but when I discovered NASA Al Worden passed away yesterday at age 88, I thought now would be a good time. Al Worden was one of only 24 people who flew to the moon, which he orbited 74 times in the NASA Command Module Endeavor. Al Worden is now being added to the long list of Apollo Astronauts who wore a Pepsi Rolex GMT-Master as seen below on his wrist.

Al Worden as born Alfred Merrill Worden. Worden was an Air Force Test Pilot and an instructor at the Aerospace Research Pilots School located in Farnborough, England. Worden went o to serve as a pilot from 1957 to 1961 in the 95th Fighter Interceptor Squadron headquartered at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland.

During his military flight career he logged more that 4,000 hours of flight time, which included 2,500 hours flying jets.

In the photo below we see Al Worden in 1968 at NASA's Langley Research Center located in Hampton, Virginia which is the oldest NASA field center, and notice he is wearing his Pepsi GMT-Master.

The photo above shows Al Worden in 1968 with fellow NASA Apollo Astronaut, Stuart Roosa, and notice on Al Worden's wrist we get a clear positive ID of his Oyster Bracelet.

APOLLO 15

1971

The NASA Apollo 15 Mission launched July 26, 1971 @ 13:34:00.6 UTC on a Saturn V AS-510 Rocket and flew to the Moon. Al Worden (center) was the Command Module Pilot, along with David Scott (left) and Lunar Module Pilot, James Irwin who is pictured on the right.

In the photo below we see the Apollo 15 launch vehicle as it is being rolled out to the launchpad Kennedy LC-39A.

In the photo below we see Irwin saluting the camera with the Lunar Rover Vehicle on the moon.

Apollo 15 was the first mission to the moon that used the Lunar Vehicle on the moon. This was an amazing feat as bring a car to the moon surface as part of the payload created a huge challenge. The Lunar Rover was was made by Boeing at a total cost of $40 Million and could be folded into a tiny footprint of 5feet by 20 inches (1.5 m by 0.5 m), and it only weighed 460 pounds (209 kg). The rover could carry two astronauts and could be driven at speeds up to 6 to 8 MPH (10 to 12 KM/H). The lunar rover was innovative as it allowed Astronauts to travel far afield from their lunar lander while being able to conduct scientific experiments.

The photo below taken on August 2, 1971 shows the Apollo 15 Command & Service Module in lunar orbit in a photo that was taken from the Apollo Lunar Module, Falcon.

Al Worden took the photo of earth during the translunar coast. The caption from this images states:

"The view of Earth taken during the Translunar Coast from the distance of about 25.000 to 30.000 nautical miles from Earth. South America is to the left. Central America is in the upper center. The gulf of Mexico and Florida is seen to the lower right of Central America. North America is in the upper right. The north-west part of Africa is seen in the lower right."

 This photo reminds me of Carl Sagan's ultra profound Pale Blue Dot speech which can be seen below:

The Need For Speed

In the photo below we see Al Worden posing during a racing event at the Daytona International Raceway.

Below is a fascinating list of NASA Astronauts, Test Pilots and NASA Flight Directors I have discovered and documented wearing Rolex watches over the past dozen years:

Chuck Yeager of Edwards Air Force Base was first to break sound barrier in 1947 while wearing a Rolex Perpetual Oyster.

William Knight of Edwards Air Force Base Fastest manned flight of Mach 6.7 (4,250 Miles Per Hour ins X-15 which is nearly 7 times the speed of sound) in 1967.

A Special Note from Jake about the COVID-19 Virus

A Special Note from Jake

I understand this is an extremely challenging time for humanity. It seems in many ways as if we are experiencing World War 3, and I believe all of humanity is at war with the COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic.

I believe one of the blessings in disguise is all this "Social Distancing" will bring all people of the world closer together as we realize we are ALL on the same team. This not only includes mankind, but all of nature. I don't think it's ever been more apparent to humanity we are all sharing this home which is a spinning blue marble in space, and it is imperative we take real and meaningful action to preserve the only home we know.

In case you haven't noticed, I am the President of the Rolex fan club, and I have also always been a huge fan of Patek Philippe, so much so I have been publishing PatekMagazine.com for the past 9 years. Today I noticed on Patek Philippe's Instagram account they announced they will temporarily suspend their Instagram posting as seen below:

I am doing the exact opposite of Patek Philippe. In other words, now more than ever I believe people need a healthy distraction from all the chaos and pandemonium, and that is exactly what I intend to achieve with all my great readers all over the world.

Whether we hop in the Rolex Time Machine and go back to yesteryear to take a nostalgic look around, or explore other interesting ideas. In other words, we all need many 'Calgon, take me away!!!" moments at a time like this! For the record, my goal is NOT to bury our collective head in the sand and inundate my readers with just positive stories, but to also look reality in the face as we explore the world we ALL share.

Rolex Boutique in New York Closed

Our Captain Danny just snapped this photo of the Rolex Boutique in New York City and said "Meanwhile in New York, the sign on the door says Rolex is closed."

For some reason this Van Halen song, "Where Have All The Good Times Gone!" keeps playing in my head when I think about what is going on in the world today. I think in times of crisis it forces us to reflect on things and people we have taken for granted in the past, like simply being able to go to a nice restaurant for a great meal.

There is an amazing quote that comes to mind I will share with you which I believe is perfectly on-point for the world today, which comes from the great founding father of the United States, General George Washington:

“We should never despair, our situation before has been unpromising and has changed for the better, so I trust, it will again. If new difficulties arise, we must only put forth new exertions and proportion our efforts to the exigency of the times.”

—General George Washington

One More Thing

Rudyard Kipling pictured above

The Rudyard Kipling poem "If" was my grandfather Jake's favorite poem and it keeps running through my head so I thought I would share it with you:

If you can keep your head when all about you
    Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
    But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
    Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
    And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
    If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
    And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
    Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
    And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
    And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
    And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
    To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
    Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
    Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
    If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
    With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,

    And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

Rolex Temporarily Closes Factories

Rolex Temporarily Closes Factories

Jean-Frédéric Dufour

ROLEX CEO Response to COVID-19

For the first time in history, that I am aware of, Rolex CEO, Jean-Frédéric Dufour, in response to the Coronavirus COVID-19 Virus Pandemic made the decision to temporarily close down all of the Rolex factories which are all located in Switzerland.

Below is a letter Rolex CEO, Jean-Frédéric Dufour that discusses Rolex's approach to protecting all employees from the COVID 19 virus.

Jean-Frédéric Dufour Letter seen above translated into English reads,

Ladies and Gentlemen

Dear Colleagues,

I already told you last week, we are facing a very serious problem. In order to protect you, your families and your loved ones, but also to limit as much as possible the risks of spread of Coronavirus, we decided to close our production sites in Geneva, Bienne and Crissier on Tuesday March 17 5:00 PM until Friday, March 27, 2020. Of course, this date may be postponed depending on the evolution of the epidemic.

Certain services will have to remain open for reasons of operational imperatives. Your managers will give you more details on this.

In the meantime, we ask you to respect to the letter the containment measures issued by our authorities in Switzerland and in France.

I am sure that this is a difficult time and that if all of us adapt the right behavior, it will help to help stabilize the situation and allow work to be resumed safely within the shortest possible time.

Thank you for respecting the instructions of your managers to ensure this closing in good conditions.

Good luck for the days to come, take care of yourself!

Best regards,

Jean-Frédéric Dufour

Geneva, March 16, 2020

This news does not come as a surprise although much of the world remains shell-shocked by the unfolding events.

This is the first time in history that I can think of where the entire planet has had to respond largely as a single organism, and hopefully when all is said and done, it will have served as a blessing in disguise.

Rolex's response, as always, is ultra-professional, which is what makes Rolex, Rolex.

On a Positive note, since we are on the subject of the Rolex factories, all of which are in Switzerland, let's hop in the Rolex Time Machine and go back to 2013 to take a tour through the Rolex factories.

Seven years ago, back in November of 2013, Rolex invited me to become one of four horological journalists to be the first to tour all four Rolex factories in Switzerland. Ariel Adams, from A Blog To Watch took the photograph of me standing in front of Rolex's International Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland seen below.

Benjamin Clymer, James Dowling, Ariel Adams, and Jake Ehrlich on November 19, 2013
(Hodinkee.com, Timezone.com, ABlogToWatch.com, and RolexMagazine.com)

I wrote a super-detailed article which outlined my experience touring all the Rolex factories, which is named, "Inside Rolex: Exploring What Makes Rolex Tick", which I highly recommend reading.

Below are a bunch of images from my tour story of the Rolex Wonka Works in Switzerland:
